a little suprised to see so many wanting Carvs out. I understand the age and injury concerns, but his recent poor season is not reflective of what a great player he has been for the club.
if had to choose where to open up some space at the back I would ship Ferriera first to create room for Mancienne rather than Carvahlo.

Nice, you lost me on the title.
Carvs should stay for sure.

with the injuries we have suffered at CD it makes sense to keep him around. Even if he is just a step off from what he was, he still would be excellent cover. Not sure Carvs would want to play second fiddle though.

Er, ok...I "googled" it.
To "trip the light fantastic" is to dance nimbly or lightly, or to move in a pattern to musical accompaniment.
 Ok...

I think Carvs definitely needs to stay. Even injured, he is top defender who knows what the league is all about. Would rather have him in there in a pinch and not a guy like Ben Haim.
The real wild card is Alex, who really did well and was happy under Hiddink. With a new manager coming in who might not rate him, well, we'll see.

I guess there are three arguments being put forth by the Sell Carvs Crowd:
1. We actually need the money. If we can get a good deal for Carvs, say around 15 mil pounds, we should sell. If it's 10 mil or less, then no. It looks like we have to sell to raise funds these days.
2. Too many CBs. We have five quality CBs and all of them should regularly see the pitch. So one of them has to go. Granted, two of them (Ivanovic and Mancienne) can play other positions
3. Opportunities for Youth. Carvahlo is good, but is he significantly better than guys like Alex and Ivanovic? We need to play the younger guys. Not at the expense of winning trophies (see Arsenal), but if they can be just as good, why not. Mancienne could be the cover/4th choice.

I am absolutely shocked at some of these comments. Carvalho is twice the defender Alex is, no question about it. He is almost the perfect match for JT while Alex is makes our central defense a bit too slow. 31 IS NOT OLD for a central defender... he has a good 3 seasons left in him. If it's an issue of generating transfer revenue, then why not sell Alex (who would fetch far more)? IMO Ivanovic has looked a class above in every match (but one... and that was at RB) while Alex has had quite a few poor matches. He did start coming on under Hiddink, especially in the Champions League, but Guus isn't going to be back. Anyone who thinks an Alex-Terry partnership is better than a Carvs-JT combo needs to have their heads examined. Carvs had a hamstring injury, which was mishandled. And somehow that means he's lost his heart? If that was true he'd have been off to Inter last summer.
Also, we don't really have too many defenders. Ash is the only left-back, Bosingwa the only right-back. Ivanovic has to cover at full-back and Mancienne will/should be out on loan. Rajkovic can't even play in England next season and will be with Twente. Why would we sell Carvalho and leave us with JT, Alex, Ivanovic, Bosingwa and Ash? I hope Carvs is in our 2009/10 starting XI. Only last year were many (both Chelsea and oppo fans) proclaiming that Carvalho had eclipsed Terry as the cornerstone of the defense. Some fans here are a bit too what have you done for me lately and easily forget such things. Hiddink is gone, if we rely on the likes of Alex and Malouda next season then we will get exactly what Ballack did to us... a fine few months at the end of the season and absolutely no form carrying over.

Claudio I don't think anyone has said that Carvalho has lost heart, (I'm too lazy to try and find out so point it out for me =), but he hasn't had a solid run of fitness in a while. It's not good to keep a player around like that.
Healthy and match fit, I would take the guy over Alex or Ivan any day of any week. I love him. It just doesn't make sense to keep someone who can't stay healthy.

well actually someone did above, I subtly commented upon it as well:D, and pointed out he played 30 League matches last year and had more minutes than JT, and was probably one of the best players on the team and cb.s in the world last year. One mishandled hammy this year does not make him a permanant injury case

And is having constant hamstring problems. Prior to Bolton and Pool, when was the last time he played?
. he has a good 3 seasons left in him.
Not if his injuries keep affecting him.

We don't have too many left backs. We have too many rightbacks and center backs as of now.
and Mancienne will/should be out on loan.
Why on Earth should we loan him out again? Of the few times he's played he's been fine. It'd be stupid to loan him out again after what he's shown when he has gotten a chance.
if we rely on the likes of Alex and Malouda next season then we will get exactly what Ballack did to us... a fine few months at the end of the season and absolutely no form carrying over.
Slippery slope, keep in mind our last two managers.

If he were 25 or 26 I'd agree, but at 31 it's a different story.

doesnt sound like Carvs is interested in leaving
just my preference, but I would keep him. Also I would like to see some defining of the roles for both Ivanovic and Mancienne
personally I prefer Ivanovic as a CD first and RB second
and Mancienne as a RB first and CD second.

Hamstring injuries do not just go away unfortunately. Especially not at that age. Carvs has been my favorite defender, even over JT, I just think if we get a good offer we need to consider it. It's the same with almost every player on the team, barring Lamps and Essien and maybe a couple others.

If he wants to stay knowing that he might end up being second fiddle, cool. But I'm of Ben's mindset as long as a offer too good to pass up comes along.

Personally I want to see how Mancienne does at CB for us at one point.
