View Full Version : Was Beasley brilliant or lucky? [R]

Someone has to ask this question. In looking at the replay, it almost looks like he slipped or miskicked on the shot. His body position looked to me like he was going near post and high and he even had the goalie going that way too. All of a sudden, the ball goes through the goalie's legs.
I'm not too high on Beasley as a finisher and really believe the goal was more luck then planned. The buildup however, was first class.

For a victory in Europe, I'll take it either way.

Can't we just be happy that he scored? Very few players, including the best strikers in the world, would aim to nutmeg a keeper from 6-8 yards away.

It's like asking if Henry was brilliant or lucky with his strike against ManU last weekend. Basically he just wound up and hit a rocket right down the middle, that swerved and fooled the keeper. Brilliant or lucky? A little of both!!!
Or maybe A LOT of both!!! :)

I actually think it looked more like it was intentional after I saw the replay. The goalie was in the easiest position to meg, but if it was intentional or not I wouldn't recommend doing it again.

Ever notice how the best players are always the luckiest?

Well, what wasn't lucky was the way he froze Dudek. Before reading this thread, it occured to me how a fast guy bearing down on a keeper really limits your options. Guys who are crafty can cause a keeper to misstep but the keeper can also outguess them and make them look silly. Not so easy with someone as fast as Beasley.
Given the position of the ball and that DMB was moving at full tilt, Dudek was left offbalance, in no-man's land. I don't think he expected Beasley to arrive as early as he did.

Speed kills. I was overjoyed to see someone on the squad finally finish one with quality and against a high-quality keeper like Dudek.
It was brilliant in my book. And for those that think it was lucky, then I'll take more of the same.

Hmm, I think im probably alone in thinking overall, Beasley's performance was ok, but not that great. The boy needs to learn how to slow up, and look to spring a teamate with a pass instead of always going straight at defenders. Now dont get me wrong, attacking defenders is a good thing, but DMB is a bit too predictable.
If he added that slower, look up and find teamates part to his game, I think it would be a quantom leap development. He gives guys troubles, but adding in the ability to assist on goals from upfield, and forcing defenders to make a "do I stay back, and risk letting him pick out a teamate, or do I close him down, and risk getting burned?" decision.
Yet as it is now.. while he is individually dangerous... I just get the feeling he doesnt make anyone around him that much more dangerous. I have no problems with him in there at left mid, but watching him I feel there is something missing on the field.
That said, anytime you score a GWG you didnt do too shabby, wether you misshit it or not.

Beasley did look up. If he saw his buddy Landon is there, he will do a quick one-two.

As others have said, I think he got a bit lucky just because you usually don't aim to nutmeg the keeper on a play like that. But as the saying goes...sometimes you'd rather be lucky than good.

It was scored on Jerzy Dudek.

Which will create for DMB, and LD would be happy to oblige.. but what kind of service is LD going to get from that? In fact doesnt it just make LD more likely to get clocked by a central defender who does his homework, because he knows that instead of trying to spring landon, DMB is going to play a quick 1-2?
Another question, did DMB recieve more service from the forwards against Poland, or give more service? And regardless of the answer, was it in the kind of balance you want to see?
I dont know.

It's amazing how many of Beasley's "miskicks" end up being goals.

I care because if it was luck, he's less likely to be able to do it again. So you wouldn't be worried if the only goals we got during qual. matches were fluke own goals?

Chance Favors the Prepared.
Or rather, it was lucky because it was brilliant.
I'm amazed at the amount of Beasley-cheapening that goes on on these pages. He's a vital player for our National team. I understand not everyone's a Fire fan, but take it from one - watching him over his career, and especially last season - he continually plays more and more with his head up. More and more, his speed and dribbling go to being simply tools in a very well-supplied box.
Furthermore, he changes the face of any game he's in. He draws defenders and, more importantly, fouls in set-play range. He causes the general trouble that leads to opportunities.

I agree, look, he hit it hard and low and with a purpose. It went in, Yay. Jersey Dudek probably felt pretty silly.

I agree with the first part, but I don't think Dudek feels silly at all. Keepers get nutmegged all the time by short range shots. As long as the offensive player (e.g., DMB) hits the ball low and hard and not right at the keeper's feet, there is really nothing that a keeper can do.
