United officials acknowledged the policy could upset some of their fans, who have been in the habit of buying tickets on game day without fear of a sellout. The team is scrambling to spread the word about ticket availability in English- and Spanish-language media in an attempt to avoid large numbers of ticketless fans arriving at RFK on Saturday.

"What we will likely do for people who do show up [not knowing the game is sold out] is have a special ticket [discount] for the April 24 game just to kind of re-pay them for the inconvenience," Payne said.

Also important:
Pressed on the issue yesterday, Nowak said he has not decided who will start and won't tell the players until he holds meetings with each of them Friday.

"What we saw today, [Adu] is really prepared for this game," the rookie coach said, "but I don't know if it will be 90 minutes."

Well this is hint number one that the limited stadium option is f-ing retarded...

Remember how large the crowd was several seasons ago when we opend with (I believe) LA, and thousands of Salvadorians filled the upper deck? I believe we had around 35,000 for that one. Shame it will never happen again.

The way I see it is you lose nothing by opening the upper deck for the LIMITED number of games when you know the demand will outstrip the supply. This will happen only a few times a year and we should know and be able to anticipate the need based on presales ALONE. Thinking we can halt overnight what by most accounts is a cultural difference between the American soccer public and Hispanics in walk up ticket sales is simply ridiculous. KP is blowing this one. "Creating" a demand is simply BS. Its either there or isn't and we shouldnt be turning away good money nor ostricizing good fans.

These type of articles are great. We're getting reports from different points of view and on different topics... more so now than in the past. I think both the Times and the Post have highlighted some of the other young stars this preseason, with Gros and Carroll both getting some time in the news.

I think they won't start him.

Think about it. Cerritos and Moreno start. When it becomes obvious they are ineffective, bring in the boy. He'll be fresh and the contrast of his skills will be more dramatic and noticable to the average fan. And what an ovation he'll get! Especially if we go down a goal.

Warren

Nelsen Petke Namoff

Carrol

Olsen Convey Dema

Stewart

Cerritos Moreno

Don't start him because I have a beer bet with a friend that he won't start. :)

I'm not exactly sure of the logic in discounting tix to the next game for people who didn't pony up in time. If that game is part of your season package, or if you bought that single game in advance, you are paying more than they will. Usually you get a price break for buying in advance.

I know this is (hopefully) a one-time deal and a special situation, but it doesn't pass the sniff test. What makes DCU think that people who walk up to the opener are going to want to commit in advance to the next game?

Personally, I hope it rains hard and the walk-up crowd is small, wet, and miserable.

I can already hear the chants if he doesn't start.

Freddy! Freddy! Freddy!

It will be nice to have the place full and rocking.

Try bs@bigsoccer.com with the password bs or try bigsoccer@bigsoccer.com with the password bigsoccer.

I think it's a combination of this - "bs@bigsoccer.com" with the password "bigsoccer"

Now that's funny.

As for the "FreddyFreddyFreddy" chants. I know they will come, but damn we are a simpleton, uncreative bunch if that is all we can come up with...

Good night! If Nowak doesn't start Freddy, I'll be shocked and dismayed. You GOTTA start Freddy for this event (notice I didn't say 'game').

Pull him 60 minutes in if you must, but you MUST start him!

Jeez, haven't you heard of foreplay? Just jam him in there at the start? How about getting the crowd warmed up for a while, say the first half. They'll be begging for the insertion of Freddy!

You know why he MUST start?

I was just sitting here listening to Colin Cowherd ask his listeners on ESPN Radio, NON-SOCCER fans by the way, to call and say whether they'll watch Freddy this Saturday?

MOST of the callers said they would try to watch and give Freddy a chance.

And whether he plays or not, they won't watch next week when Chicago plays at SJ. Nowak should not coach this team based on non soccer fans who might watch.

just had an interesting dialogue with United brass about the stadium bleachers that can be set up on the South side of the stadium.
Takes TWO WEEKS to set those bad boys up - and it's expensive when you factor in liability insurance, cost of set up and dismantle. They have to sell every seat to break even, which they clearly would do at this game but they did not know that at the time they would have had to make the call.
