from an out-of-towner: From the DC United website I gather that backpacks are not permitted in the stadium but "bags" are. Anyone know how strictly this is enforced, and what constitutes a "bag"? I'm coming down on the train from NY Saturday morning with my son and heading back after the game, would like to know what I can carry in. Appreciate any help.

You can bring a small bag, something along the line of a woman's purse. They will search it. I don't know how old your child is, but if you pack it with a few of his things and let him carry it, then it won't be a problem at all.

I'm an out-of-towner, and usually park and ride the Metro in from the New Carrollton station when I come, sometimes hanging out in the District ahead of the game. On two occassions last year I came with a backpack and didn't have a problem. It was searched, but that's it.

branko, just be aware of the restrictions on what's in that bag. No bottles (plastic or glass), no food. Quite a change from 1996 when we'd bring dinner and a trash bag, but that's the way it is.

Unfortunately the security at RFK is not consistent so you might get waived, you might get searched (and if complete chaos on Sat might be more waiving). Travel with as little as possible (you might even be better carrying the items from the bag in your hand and putting the bag under your arm and then regrouping once inside). I've also walked in with my bag under my rain poncho and no check. I know this is assinine but its the way it is.

Leave pocket knives at home (or remove from your key ring). and yeah, no outside food and drinks.

I've seen ladies sent away just because they had a purse. On the other hand, I've gotten in with a backpack. Not consistant is right.

Of course, you can use this to your advantage, if a security goon won't let you in, just walk away and try another gate.

Seeing as they gave out back packs (well sort of) late last season, I would think it's no a problem for the most part. I take a back pack nearly every time. They always went through it but allowed it in. This year I plan to just use the one DC United gave out. Hopefully that won't be issues with it this year either.

everytime i've walked into RFK i've had my keys with me which have a swiss army knife(not intentional, i always forgot to take it off) and each time they didn't say anything about it so inconsistent is the best way to put it...or they're complete morons.

Keep in mind the first game of the season always has the Security in a daze...All of the new security personal hired will be very pushy at first...but this tends to fade after a few games...This being a big crowd will also add to the checks...I would just wear some cargo pants and pocket all safe items, carry an empty bag in with you and tell them its for D.C. gear you will be buying at the stands....---shrug--- :D

Went to a rodeo last summer around here in Montana...sign said "Check your guns and knives at the door"...not sure if it was a joke...but there sure was a line at the check point......serious!!!....
