I've done a little bit of exploring on the internet looking for complete sets of MLS trading cards. I used to buy them for NHL, MLB, and NFL seasons in the mid-70's, so I know what I'm looking for.
However, I have found:
a) They aren't produced on an annual basis.
b) Any available sets are merely boxes of 10-card packs - perhaps with the usual stale stick of gum.
Since I'm not completely informed about this, I am hoping someone here could provide me with a quick primer or leads to where I can do some digging.
Thanks in advance.

Try ebay. I've seen sets listed on there or maybe even craigslist

MLS cards were produced in the following years:1997, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. No gum any of those years. eBay is your best source for complete sets. Lots for sale on eBay.

I have two (2) complete sets of every MLS card made from 1997 through 2006. The rare autographed cards, #'d from as low as 10 made, make complete sets an extreme rarety.
I am currently trying to complete years 2007, 2008 and 2009.

My guess would be one of the autographed cards out there but had Beckham's auto been put in circulation it would probably be the most valuable. From what I hear though, it was never issued...

Like others have said, try ebay. There are plenty of MLS sets and singles to be found on there.
