Would I even be able to make a cup? I read in the rules somewhere that the weakest teams don't make it to the cup.
It depends on where the team you take over was, you could end up being anywhere from first in a division 5 series to eighth in a division 6 series, and the teams that qualify for the cup are teams that are in 4-5th place or higher in division 6 if I remember right, so odds are that you will be in the cup.

Thanks. Here's some more questions.
1. When I start, how should i spend my money? What percentage should I use for the youth team, coaches, arena, etc.
2. How many specialists will help me get promoted after this upcoming season?

Try doing some reading while you're waiting for your team to be cleared.

Revsfan, I just got my team 8 weeks ago. Here's my advice to you.
1. Read, read,read
2. These guys on BigSoccer really know their stuff
3. Read, read, read
4. When you get your team, get to know it well before spending large amounts of money. Your starting amount won't carry you very far.
5. Have fun

Only about 2,000 teams in the US don't make the Cup. Your chances of making the cup, are better than not making it.

i think u should scan this thread for many of the things u asked in this post.
for the youth squad, i would suggest not starting out with $20,000 investment per week. that is for later when you establish you club. there are 3 investments that you can have in your youth squad: $5,000, $10,000, and $20,000. each investment will limit how good your youth squad can be, the best is excellent. i think you should start out with the $10,000 investment until you reach passable, the maximum for that level, and if you're ready, move up to the full $20,000 a week

What happens to listed players who expire when the server is down?

Their time is extended by the length of the downtime.

That's what I thought was supposed to happen. However a winger I had wanted was sold despite his deadline running out at 20:52. He only went for $24k when with last minute bidding he could have gone for double that.

That is what should have happened. I don't think there is any recourse though. :(

My opinion on youth squad funding is that a new player shouldn't spend any money on their youth squad for least one season, maybe two. The reason is that $10,000 or $20,000 a week is big money for a new player and that money can go for many basic needs a new player has such as a better coach, larger stadium, trainees, etc. The youth squad likely will provide little or no benefit the first season or two and it's better to start funding it when the cost of youth squad funding won't have such a major impact on the club's overall finances.

Is that true of players that are listed but *don't* expire during the dwntime as well?
I would be disappointed if the players I careful listed at peak time ended up with deadlines in the middle of the night.
On the other hand I would then know to look for bargin buys in night that got similarly delayed.

HT is back up for me, so to answer my own question: No, transfer deadlines for listed players that do not expire during a downtime are unchanged.

I haven't updated my newbie advice to account for the change in stadium pricing at the end of the upcoming season, but it should be in good shape otherwise.
http://www.hal-pc.org/~enigma/hattrick/hattrick_newbie.html
(an earlier version of that is posted upthread here, I've since tweaked it to adjust for the attendance changes that occurred last season, as well as to adjust for some criticism that one or two of my suggestions received)
Oops, I just noticed that I referred to Assessed Value in one spot there. To get TSI, divide AV by 100.
Also, I need to make the last para more generic, it refers to an upcoming offseason, whereas right now we're coming out of the offseason with the first cup games in three hours from now.

Made a bad buy yesturday.
Paid 5k for a 17 yr old passable playmaker ... which sounds great, but then I realized that he's an anti-clown: solid leadership, nasty disposition.
So I'm wondering what I should do:
Just try and sell him on, or train him anyway.
He'd be replacing a 18 yr old passable as a trainie.
I'm not that worried about the effet he'll have on team spirit ... more concerned that I won't get a decent price for him down the line.
What do yo think, sell or hold?

You can't anymore, you have to wait until the end of the current season now. Once that time comes, a link on the right side of your "The Club" section will say rename team. Just remember that renaming your team will cause you to lose supporters who liked your old name better and costs something like $10,000 I think.

You can only change team name at the end of the season. You will lose 3% of your supporters and yes it costs $10,000.

I need to start buying players for all positions that can average at least 3-1/2 - 4 stars a game. What sort of cash will I be looking at spending for such players?

Well, a formidable striker with wretched experience and no passing will get you 3.5 stars and cost you 900k or so.
Obviously there are cheaper ways to do it.
A passable winger passable defender with weak experience will get you 3.5 stars as a wing back.
You just have to look for experienced players.
