View Full Version : What Two Things?

Sometime back it was brought to my attention (by my mates in high places), there are only two things that sums up all that one needs to know about the activity one does, everything else is just a derivation of these.
I summed up the two things in footy officiating duties as:
timely fair decisive action
file proper report
What would you say are the two things?
Other two things are documented here (http://www.csun.edu/~dgw61315/thetwothings.html) in case you have bandwidth and time to spare.

1: Know the LOTG
2: Be confident in ANY decision you make
You can actually get away with questionable #1, if you're good at #2.

I like a combination of two above:
1) DFU
2) Always have an escape plan, in case you forget #1

I know the reference perfectly, I was wondering why it was posted here since it has ******** all to do with refereeing.

No one that knows me would ever call me a person of God, and religion is not really "present" in my life. I've never read the entire Bible. BUT, If you don't think that that post has anything to do with refereeing, or soccer in general, especially for those who are true believers, then you are out of your mind. For those that have found their faith, I think that they live by that passage in every day of their life.
The original question asked what two things that sum up all that one needs to know about the activity one does. Everything else is just a derivation of these. Someone answered the question as to what 2 things they thought summed up the activity that they did, and that everything else derived from that. If you think that a Bible citation is irrelevant in this discussion, and ask an ignorant question like "wtf?", then that's insulting to those that feel that way. You can bring whatever 2 things (or more for that matter) to bear whenever you want. If you don't like what other people use for their things, then keep it to yourself.
FWIW, my 2 things are:
1. Maintain your integrity above all else
2. Never go anywhere without TP
Let's get back to the meat and potatoes of this thread.

I posted it not as religious commentary, but rather an allusion. The form of the question asked reminded me of the passage.

What's insulting is being proselytized to in a soccer referee forum, especially when there's a perfectly good forum available for that sort of thing further on down the board. However, Gary V clarified his intention already after your post, something that I very much appreciated (repped!).
By the way, closing your 2+ paragraph, personal attack-laced rant with "let's get back to the meat and potatoes of the discussion" is hilarious. I have to commend you for your sense of irony.
Even more entertaining is that your two choices also have ******** all to do with refereeing. The point of this exercise in the first place seemed to be to choose the two things that basically define your method/style of refereeing and have a useful discussion (about refereeing) based on those. Now I don't have any delusions of grandeur which somehow make me think I have the right to tell you what or what not to keep to yourself, as you seem to. So while I'm happy to state that you're free to share things like "don't forget TP," it might be helpful to realize they amount to a side salad when discussing the meat and potatoes of the two things people define being a referee by.
So try it this way. You may even like it, and your post might even stay on topic!
1. Enjoy yourself - this will rub off on players, coaches, everyone involved
2. Don't beat yourself up if you make a mistake
Be sure to let me know if I may be of further assistance or if there's anything else I can clarify for you.

Cause, you know, him posting that = proselytizing, right? I mean his whole purpose was to try to convert people, it's so clear!
Wait. No it's wasn't.
Especially since he had clarified it as NOT religious commentary means he is NOT trying to convert someone, which means its NOT proselytizing. Maybe you meant another word. At least I hope you did after you are on a high horse the rest of your post.
The sensitivities on some people...
Anyways, my two (which I decided on after President's Cup this weekend, watching some games):
1) Be flexible with your attitude towards the players
2) Sell your calls
