been playing soccer for a few years as a old guy (28 ha ha),
no formal training in soccer.
im terrible at beating my man one on one. once a guy begins to close in i dump the ball off.
worked well enough for rec soccer, but since ive been playing with some 2nd/1st division type players im suddenly the worst guy on the field.
it seems like even moderate players can pass a guy in the midfield with a few little fakes. i have alot of endurance but when its a dead ball situation i cant seem to muster the power i want to fake and explode or something to that extent to make some room.
what can i do as i cant practice w/ a team or anything, its just me.

your best bet is to show going one direction to get your man to turn his feet/hips and then cut the other way - when the defender is basically standing and you are running at him, it shouldnt be a problem to execute this simple deke
other than that, i'd say get out to the park with a friend who is willing to let you come at him over and over again - remember the whole idea of moves is to misrepresent where you want to go... show one, go the other
also, if you beat a guy going outside the first time, shoe outside and go in the next time - dont become predictable
buut above all, just go for it - better to get dispossessed sometimes than to never take on defenders - even if he wins 75% of the battles, you will tire him out

While the ball and you are moving, it is always easier to fake the defender.

Dude - I am much like you, but I am 31 years OLD. I played so-so in high school and then gave it up till now.
If you go to www.strongsoccer.com there are detailed explanations and amazing video clips of several one on one moves. They have training vid clips and the actual game footage. Great site!
Being an analaytical and technical son of a gun, it was perfect for me.
I also got a DVD called All The Right Moves, which breaks everything down for you, but it has all the stuff on the website I already mentioned. Poor production quaity, but it helps a newbie.
They say the best tapes to watch are Just Kickin It and the Coerver tapes.
I agree with the previous response. JUST F'ng DO IT next time. It's better than standing there. Also, when you change direction in space, rather than when the defender is right in your face, then you keep the defense honest.
I make it a point to slow down my speed to 70% of full speed when I have the ball, and this AMAZINGLY makes things sooooo much easier. Just try it. You can see everything out there, and I feel like Zidane out there, haha.
PEACE
hope that helps!

nah, just change the pace of the ball. u can stop the ball wait till ur opponent lunges in to take it and then quickly move it out of the way before he gets it. it works all the time.
another thing is running with the ball then stopping and pausing for a second then starting again that works too.

One of the most important things to remember is to just beat the defender and not try to make him look stupid cuz then u will begin faking urself out and lookin like a fool urself.

This might be a little late for you, but you can try plyometrics to improve your agility which GREATLY improves footwork. For something simple try hopping over a soccer ball. Place your feet together, and jump sideways over the ball with your feet glued together, jump as high as you can as fast as you can. Try to pull your legs up at the climax of your jump to increase height.
This helps tremendously as I can usually skip over opponents' challenges, they have to yank my jersey to stop me.

The best thing to do is try and change direction and sprint off or get close to the player at pace and as it looks like hes about to commit himself go a different way. I am much like you yet im 17 and i find it much easier just to make the easy pass, because if you can't do the easy stuff dont try the hard

Do this- put your back to him pick the ball up on your foot, flick it over his head, spin around him- man beaten- simple.

Easy little trick that works almost everytime...Fake a pass emphatically, make it seem really really real. the defender will open his legs wide to try and stop the pass, then u just slip the ball through the legs leaving the defender looking like he was still playing in his towns rec league.
Or you could just use the classic rainbow.
Scissors are also really effective for getting a defender off balance. Just make sure he thinks ur going the way that ur really not going.

Not Exactly Simple is it? Doing this trick you risk being disposessed maybe by a second defender/midfielder. Or if you don't get enough height and kick it in the opposing players face?

the simple and fast moves are the best moves IMO
rainbow- no good
elaborate turn around try to flick it over his heat whatever it as - no good
simple scissors - EXTREMELY GREAT see the nike ad at www.nikesoccer.com. At the end rhonaldinho (however you spell it) pulls a great scissors, then an incredible elastico. both work the same. They both beat the defender, and that's all you're looking for

The Ronaldhino elastic or flip flap is the most incredible thing I have seen. How do you pull that move off?
(it is the move where he looks as though he giving an outside the foot pass to his right (with right foot), but then moves the ball back in the air to his left. The ball actually stays onthe foot the whole time so it goes right then sharply left.
Check out the commerical of Brazil-Portugal on the Nike site. he does it in there in slow-mo.

It's actually pretty simple, although i can get a lot of air under the ball really easily, and im really fast on the spin, i practice turning like that every day.

this is too complex. It has a high risk of not working, even if you've done it 1,000,000 times, and while you learned that, you could have learned many other moves that would have worked well/better. In addition to this, after defenders see you do it once, next time you put your back to the defender, they'll know whats coming

If you are on the sideline faceing the player then do this:Take a touch towards the middle of the field,Then as he moves with you nutmeg him with the sole of your shoe going backwards. If you are already have your back to him do the same without going towards the middle first.

Then u can fake that move i said earlier- and just instead of hitting it up, hit it with your heel, put it through his legs... next time, either do the original move, or he'll know your second move that i just said, hes gunna turn, be a pace slower then him, and go right over his foot and sell the foul, then that will make him keep his foot in, so u can burn him with the second move every time.

Twellman you must be playing u-10... any half-decent defender would easily screen you from the ball.
