a conversation about football with my mother makes me want to garotte myself. She's been watching it for years but still when a defender heads out a high ball she goes "OOH! Ow, that must've hurt" .....!

and....her post match reactions(the supposed consolations) are even worse..........

anything of the like happened to you?

lol

Not the same reaction but my mother didn't understand the cursing and swearing at Roy Carroll in front of my whole family when he took down Reyes in the box...

I thought this was a thread about the supposed bust up between Henry and Lauren after the United match, and the brawl at Wayne Rooney's fiancee's birthday party.

Nothing like that has happened to me but I am sick of hearing american parents say how their kid plays soccer because it is a non-violent alternative to American Football...

My Mom is a trooper... unfortunately she is a Brazil fan so she will not be going to football heaven...

The best was the mother I heard saying that her son got hit with a pitch in baseball, so she signed him up for soccer instead. I played a lot of both sports, and anyone in my position can say how much more likely you are to get injured at soccer. I didn't have the heart to break it to her...

After me playing the American football and my sister playing D-1 travel soccer, not much phases my mom on the physical side...she still overreacts to the simple, but fancy things, but takes the family obsession in stride. She knows to suspend all actions and go read or something when United (or any form of soccer for that matter) is on TV.

My wife really does try hard. Really. She tries to watch the occasional game (when they're not on so early), asks questions when I babble about teams, and sympathizes when I'm angry at my teams.

But she has no idea how fast that game is being played. She thinks, essentially, that any bad pass is just plain stupid. she has the same theory about basketball and free throws. The entire "these people are getting paid millions... why can't they pass the ball without giving it away?"

I sympathize sometimes... but when a player launches a beautiful 50 yard ball across the pitch... and it *just* misses its intended target, which would have put him through... I'm like "do you realize how hard that just was?"

She also thinks that strikers should never, ever flush even half-chances.

Great post, I know what you mean... its like people who hate on Golf... I tell them, have you ever tried it? if you could throw the ball and tiger was hitting a sandwedge he would be 10 times more accurate... but anyway back to football... this summer during summer school I dribbled a ball everywhere i went, shower, class, to eat... and people looked at me funny, I told them it was to help improve my control... they did not think much of it, then one day I was juggling outside and this group of guys come by and all proclaim that they can do that, Soccer is sooooooo easy... so I bet them that I could juggle at one time more than each of them could, added together... I let them go first and proceeded to laugh my a$$ off.. out of 6 guys the got 13, I absolutely hate it when people, assume that Soccer is easy, or not physicall... it is the most skill oriented sport in the world... no other sport requires that you be ambidextrous... have enormous stamina, body control, quickness, jumping ability, reflexes and vision... i think thats what sets Football apart from everything else, the large area of skills necessary to be competent.

I resent the title of this thread... :) It's not just mothers and girlfriends that are clueless about the obsessive love we have for this sport. I have had a very difficult time finding a guy willing to sit through a soccer match. In fact, I was actually abandonned by a boyfriend during the World Cup because I didn't give him enough attention...well, good riddance! And if I hear one more guy refer to soccer players as "lawn Fairies" I will knock off his kneecap myself. I sympathize with all of you. I simply don't understand how some people can't see the beauty and excitement of the sport. Their loss

i was just talking to my friends about this. my roommate always says soccer is a waste of time, and he hasn't played since 6th grade! he says "oh, i know soccer, i played it as a kid, boring sport". I almost kill him everytime, especially since he is a huge baseball fan....i mean come on! Baseball fans should sympathize with soccer fans. the two games have a lot in common. (wpost's Gildea wrote a great column about this c.2years ago. ill look for it)

The problem with youth soccer in this country is that AYSO is basically a joke. Half the coaches have probably never watched a proper game of top-level soccer in their lives, and all they promote is booting the ball upfield as hard as possible until it bounces into the goal. So of course kids think its boring, all they do is kick the damn thing straight forward.

I too am a baseball fan, and could never understand why there are so few people who enjoy both sports. They do have a lot of similarities. Oh well, to each his own.

umbra, I also recall seeing a similar article on ESPN.com around 2 years ago, I think during the World Cup. Can't remember who wrote it, and I have tried looking on Google, to no avail.

Golf is a very difficult hobby. I agree its difficult, I could never do it, but it's not a sport.

My girlfriend played soccer in highschool, so she knows whats going on. She remarks on the ugly players though. She is always on Ivan Campos case.

My parents are clueless about the sport and I get a lot of the "Doesn't that hurt?" Concerning heading the ball, and so I tell them, "Only when it hits you in the nose."

I feel for all of you out there who have friends and loved ones who just don't get it. My wife is fortunately one of the few who do get it. I love watching a good match with her because she understands the game, tactics, skills, etc.

But then I would hope so as she is from Central American and her dad was a pro back in the day.

I second that notion...my wife never played, doesn't have a clue but is starting to be able to see things and understand. Her first introduction to the game was when I was playing in the USISL, and now that I'm coaching her life in inundated with soccer. After games I ask her what she thought, her assessment is usually spot on.
