View Full Version : Intruiging way out ...

Incredulous as I was to read the Observer article this weekend about Gerard Houllier, England manager and as unfounded as it turned out to be in the wake of SGE's decision to re-commit to us, it did get me thinking.

In the event that Houllier faces the end of the road come summertime, what can be done to find a solution that allows Liverpool to hire new blood without rendering a great disservice to the man that has done so much for this club and who retains such great affection and respect amongst most true fans?

Well how's this:

Rick Parry, FA bigwig that he is, secures the post of FA Technical Director that Howard Wilkinson vacated when he took his short and ill-advised trip to Wearside for Gerard Houllier.

Houllier and the club come to an amicable agreement, with the remainder of his contract paid up and the move presented as a progression to bigger and better things in a role ideally suited for Houllier's talents and temperament. No one, not even the most jaundiced Liverpool hater can deny that Houllier has a peerless record in the role of FA Technical Director. Bear in mind also that the English version of this post was exactly modelled on the French version, held at that time by the man himself. You couldn't get a better fit.

Houllier, therefore, gets to leave with his head held high and secure in the thanks and affection of the supporters. Liverpool get to appoint a man they consider capable of taking the foundations laid by Houllier forward (Mourhino the latest hot candidate) and England get a world-class developmental strategist in charge of their nation's footballing assets.

Job's a good 'un all round, surely?

That's probably how most of us would like to envisage GH leaving Liverpool, tho I reckon he WILL be here for the next season - and that will decide whether he gets a contract extension or not (contract runs out in June 2005).

It's probably the best thing for him. He doesn't deserve a straight up sacking, that's for sure.

It's so simple and elegant that it most likely won't work out. I supect that GH will survive if we make the CL and like USScouse says, in another thread, it'll be Ground Hog Year or deja vu all over again. It's interesting to me that two of the three teams LFC is slated to play in the USA have managers that have been touted for GH's job. Go figure.

An outsider posting here...but why should Liverpool not sack Houlier? Sure, he's a nice guy and all that but surely there must come a time to move on?

I think most people feel that as well, but understand that the man has done too much for the club to simply be shown the door and a severence package. We can't let the mediocre displays right now disguise the fact that we're miles ahead of where we were when he first took this job. A straight sacking would imply a not-so-friendly exchange and that just isn't the case. The man almost died, literally, for the club.

It's a matter of respect, really...

I couldn't agree more. Gerard Houllier has put a hell of a lot of work into Liverpool to get the club back to where it belongs, and granted we're not quite back there as yet, but we've come a long way to gaining back the respect we lost in the 90's. If we do decide that we need another Manager to take the club to the next level, I hope we treat Gerard Houllier with the respect and dignity he deserves.

I agree that Houllier has moved the club ahead in his years, but at some point the results have got to be there and the last two years it hasn't happened (since he was sick, sadly enough).

What if there's no elegant or pleasant way to end it? You'd keep him on out of respect?

I don't think anyone's implying that...
