Director Confirms English Team's Interest In Diego

In a recent interview Francisco Lopes, the Director of Football of Santos, confirmed that there was an agreement between Santos and Tottenham for the possible negotiation of the sale of Diego to Spurs.

In 2003 Spurs tried to sign Diego but their offer was refused. However he confirmed that there exists a 'gentleman's agreement' between the clubs which Santos President Marcelo Teixeira has the intention of honouring. He went on to state that there was a strong relationship between the two clubs.

It was made clear that nothing official exists between the clubs but the chances of Spurs signing Diego are now looking a lot better.

Tottenham have had a £3.5m offer for Mark van Bommel turned down by PSV Eindhoven. It would be no surprise if the Holland midfielder goes to White Hart Lane for next season, though, because PSV want to sell and the player is keen on a move to England.

Tottenham are not alone in chasing Van Bommel, with Aston Villa scouts in the crowd when he scored in the Uefa Cup win against Auxerre on Thursday and the German club Schalke 04 are also known to be interested.

Van Bommel, 26, would prefer the Premiership to the Bundesliga, having decided to leave Holland. He has become frustrated at PSV and the club are determined to sell this summer because his contract expires at the end of next season. PSV are expected to demand about £5m.

great in theory, likely useless in practice like all of our "saviours" have been in the last decade or so. the list of people who are just the person to turn around our mediocre form is longer than something really long.

there is a culture/cancer at spurs that holds good play above results, season in and season out we occasionally play some of the best football in the league, yet consistently finish mid-table. until that culture is removed no series of players, managers or owners are going to have any effect.

Actually, I think there are 3 important elements, which I have hope are actuallying being addressed:

1. Coach
A good coach (Marin O'Neill anyone?) will get the best out of a team and get them playing for/with one another.

2. Players
We've splashed a lot of cash to bring in players, but we've very often brought in the wrong players. We overpay on guys like Rebrov (and NOT Shevchenko) or Richards. We get oft-injured or past-their-prime players like Zeige and Redknapp (and I'm a big Redknapp fan). Going after Robbie Keane, Helder Postiga, Jermain Defoe and Freddy Kanoute are all the right type of players. They're coming into their prime and they really want to win. IMHO, Van Bommel is exactly that sort of Robbie Keane player, but as a Dmid, which is just what we need.

3. Prestige
To a certain extent, a team's cache allows it to attract top players, or more specifically, the lack of cache prevents the club from landing players. I think Van Bommel fits into a category that is just perfect for Spurs. Chelsea have Makalele, recently acquired Parker, and really want Davids and/or Emerson, so they're not offering him a spot. Arsenal is looking at Tiago, and are happy with Edu at the moment, so Van Bommel isn't being looked at to partner Viera in central midfield. Manchester United just bought a slew of Dmids, and Phil Neville is really coming into his own at Dmid this season, so they're not interested. Liverpool have Gerrard and Hamman, so Van Bommel would be too duplicative. So, if Van Bommel wants to come to England, Spurs make a lot of sense. If they land one of the media's choice High Profile coaches, then Spurs look to be a very hot transfer destination.

Have faith, it could happen.

As much as I love Spurs, you can't have MON - we need him too much up north. So hands off

Thing is though, as much as you lot love him up there he's done pretty much all he can. Titles, UEFA Cup progression and dominated the old enemy. It's a glass ceiling.

Much better to move back south and take on a new challenge where the financial rewards available mean the top competitions aren't out of the question! hehe

A Chelsea insider has told the Observer that Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri will become the new manager of Tottenham in the summer.

However, following the 5-2 win over Wolves yesterday, the Italian released a statement where he denied the rumours.

The insider, who is reportedly a senior figure at Stamford Bridge, claims that Ranieri will take over at White Hart Lane in the summer.

It's all about the quality of the management. Or lack of it.
