OK, so I'm doing a girls rec game last night. 25 minutes in, girl kicks the ball, bounces off a defender and hits her in the eye. She crumples and starts crying. Stop the game and hustle over to her, call the coach on and he starts taking care of her. So far so good, but she's down for a decent time, and I hear th ecoach say something about vision, so mom is kind of freaked out and I escort her onto the field as well. The get the girl off the field and take her straight to the hospital with very limited vision in the one eye. It is returning somewhat I'm told after the game, but things were just blurry for her.

Second game, a minor tangle of legs, another girl goes down, lands square on her knee and lets go with a bad cry. Sprint to her, she's out for the remainder of the game, but is walking afterwards. Find out that she's had knee problems all year long.

This is on top of the girl who got a ride in the ambulance during a HS game on Tuesday, she headed the ball and ended up with a minor concussion, a broken collar bone to a keeper from a collision (I posted a thread on here about that), a broken nose in a boys HS game (he came back for the second half), what we thought was a broken ankle in a girls HS preseason game (turns out she just severly sprained her ankle during her poor attempt at a tackle, another ambulance ride) and a bunch of other typical bumps and bruises.

So, am I cursed or is it just my turn to be the grim reaper?

Last Sunday I had a U12 Girls BPL match that was the most physical of any match I've worked during the spring season of play. Had a concussion and two bloody noses. There are times when s*** happens and there is nothing you can do about it.

Keep in mind that a referee is most frequently a position that acts in response to what already/just happened. And while the opportunity to step in as a preventative action does exist to some extenet, is rare.

Maybe teams could pay you NOT to referee their matches! You could get paid for doing nothing....sounds like a good deal to me!

I've thought about advertising my record this season, seeing if it could get me some extra cash.:D

Seriously though, it just seems to be one of those years, but I got to thinking about it last night and couldn't believe the number of big injuries I've had so far.

The administrator in me has to ask. For the rec match, did you fill out a USSF Match report and Supplemental? I'm guessing that you did, but...

All of our reports are handled in the arbiter.

Interesting... In my 30 years of refereeing, I don't think I've ever seen a USSF Match report or Supplemental!

And yet, you still run into people who think soccer is a sissy sport.

Same. I put major injuries on the match reports supplied.

I think you'd really be cursed if all those things were happening to you.:)

Well, I'M cursed this season with bad weather -- approx 1/3 of our gamedays have been cancelled for one reason or another. It's been raining here all week and all games everywhere are cancelled today because the fields are all duck ponds now.

A man is in the hospital with his wife.

"You were with me when I lost my job."
"Yes, dear."
"You were with me when the car got hit by the semi."
"Yes, dear."
"When I broke my leg you were next to me."
"Of course."
"And here I am in the hospital, and you are still with me."
"I will ALWAYS be by your side."
"Can we talk about that? I think you are bad luck."

I think I'm cursed too! Here's the deal:

7 weeks ago, I played against my buddy's team. In the second half, one of his teammates fractured two bones in my foot in a seemingly boring challenge. ER trip #1.

Last sunday, we played them again (amazingly I healed in 3 weeks and spent the last month rehabbing the foot), but this time, my British friend severely sprained his ankle. ER trip #2.

Monday, I watched their match, and two of their players got bloodied (referee's were unbelievable! No cards or even fouls called!), one pretty badly (bleeding from the ear and cheek). No ER trip, but plenty of gauze pads and medical tape used.

Tuesday, I referee their match, and again, it starts to get rough (Intramurals - what do you expect?!). This time though, I'm there to make the calls, but only after an ugly challenge results in another bloody ear and cheek (same guy). Offending player is promptly shown the yellow (reckless challenge - shoulder to shoulder, but more like in hockey than footy), and game completely mellows out. More gauze and bandages...

Wednesday, I watch their next match. This time, one of their defenders gets taken down by a striker playing well dangerously in the area (studs into his chest!). Just some ice and rest for the defender, but no call made, no card, no nothing. I had never seen such poor refereeing! Until...

Thursday - the IM final. I'm just watching again. Striker is making a run, and as he pushes the ball past the last defender, the defender thrusts his leg out into the path of the striker, clearly attempting to take him down just outside the area. Clear DOGSO call, but it wasn't made, and the striker snaps his clavicle in two as he hits the ground from the challenge. Again, referee fails miserably to make the call, and sets the wall no more than 6-7 yards from the ball. ER trip #3.

I really should stop going to their matches. It's getting ridiculous...

That's interesting. Our state will not file for USSF insurance on an injury if a USSF match report and supplemental are sent in.

Wow, really. We must fill out for all games with a send off, major injury, referee assault, etc.

When I refereed intramurals, we called the campus ambulance at least three times a day... then again, we called them every time someone went down, just to cover ourselves for liability reasons
