I remember back in 97/98 Pelé was to be given some kind of nobility title by the Queen in the UK. Did he receive it? What kind of title was that? Is he Sir Édson Arantes do Nascimento now? I thought only Commonwealth citizens could earn such titles.

If so, probably as an O.B.E. (officer of the Order of the British Empire) I think.

It was an honourary knighthood.
He can't call himself Sir Edson whatever because he's not British - but it's pretty decent all the same.
So basically it's a KBE (a rung or so above OBE).
Bob Geldof and Bill Gates have got them too.
