OK, it's been a while, and I don't see any file speculating specifically about him, so here it is, the Official Van Bommel thread!

or if you prefer the BBC, here's the lite version of the same article:

How much credibilty do you think this new Van Bommel link has? He has been linked with several clubs for the past couple of summers and nothing happened.

He's a very good player, but he does get injured an awful lot and is more of a deep playmaker rather than a ballwinner with a dominant personality, or a central midfielder who can pick up the ball and drive a team forward. A prospective great signing, but not the end of the world if it isn't true.

I do believe PSV would accept a decent offer, considering as he only has one year left on his contract and there have been noises for some time about him leaving.

However this could well be:

1) A shout out to try and put pressure on Chelsea and/or Juventus to act now and sign him.

2) PSV do want to open contract negotiations with him, this is a good way of getting them to up their offer considerably through the threat of losing him.

past linkings dont matter, this summer he is 90% leaving psv.
and i dont think you can call a deep playmaker. he is a dmid who is very good offensively imo.

I would say that's more my definition of someone like Didi Hamman, although I suppose it's splitting hairs a bit and your definition is more pleasing to me!

While we're on a similar subject, what do you think of Van Persie?? I've only seen glimpses of him, and read about his attitude....

Past linkings don't matter?

I'm not saying this won't happen. He is somone you guys could definitely use. (Not that I want you to get anyone who would make your team better.) I have found it funny that Van Bommel has said in the past that he would kie to play for about five other teams, and it never happened. (ManU and Arsenal just to name two.) It is possible that this is a trend. And how can you be so sure that he is 90% leaving PSV? True, PSV is not the strongest financially right now, but they just sold Robben. Do you think they want to throw away all their aspirations?

All I'm saying is don't be so sure you're getting Van Bommel. Things more definite than this have been said before and nothing happened.

This is all linked to Trappatoni coming down. Hardly a coincidence I think, especially with all the scouting in Holland at the moment. Trapp's coming to White Hart Lane, I can feel it.

Thanks for the input Gooner. I can understand the need to support the scum after Dallas FC had such a sh it season.

Funny thing is Dallas Fans don't seem to realize how badly they did because they are to busy trashing Landon Donovan and the 2 Time MLS cup champion Earthquakes. Check the MLS Rivalries board, it's ridiculous.

But not to start another subject, I'm with you here. This whole Dutch scouting and Diego linking just has an aroma of Trappatoni coming to WHL. Would love to see it al come together.

Van Bommel is well up for us:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/3557897.stm

Only problem is that Shalke are putting in a bid apparently. They're a big club, but I'm confident he'd choose Spurs in the Premiership over them. However there could be other bigger clubs out there, so I won't be too confident.

Just another reason to hate Schlake.

Do you really think he'd choose Schalke and the Bundesliga over Spurs and the Premiership?

The only teams most established players (in their prime) would choose in Germany are Dortmund and Bayern, and Dortmund are suffering ££££ a bit at the moment.

He's coming to Spurs.

Just remember, Spurs aren't the only Premiership team interested in Van Bommel. Although the others haven't been named, I doubt they are Manchester United, Arsenal or Liverpool.

Manchester United is adding a young Dmid from Celtic in the summer (Liam Miller) to go along with their huge stable of Dmids currently (Roy Keane, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Eric Djemba Djemba, and Kleberson), so I doubt it's them.

Arsenal is a real possibility, but the latest scuttlebut has them eying that Portuguese kid (Tiago) to pair with Viera. I could see them adding Van Bommel in addition as well now that they've got the funding for Ashburton Grove.

Liverpool looks to be holding onto both Gerrard and Hamman, so they're unlikely to be in the mix. Newcastle is a possibility, but I just don't see them making a play for him for some reason.

Chelsea are always a threat, regardless of whether the addition makes any sense, but hopefully the additions of Makalele, Smertin, and Parker to support Lampard, Veron, Cole, Geremi, Duff, and soon to add Robben and possibly Totti (among others!) will dissuade Van Bommel from choosing the rotation/lineup-competition at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs should be able to offer as much or more (in terms of money, presige, and competition) as any other Premiership club. So, as long as one of the above-mentioned clubs don't move in, we should be in the driver's seat.

03/26/2004. PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mark Van Bommel is thinking about joining Schalke and this isn't good news for Tottenham that have been linked to the player.

"I think that Schalke is a good team and I am tempted to join them," he said to the magazine 'Kicker'. "They are buying many good players and they want to build a team that can win important trophies".

Waaaaah!!!

Hopefully it just brings balance to the rumours to keep the attention away, fingers crossed.

Apparently the club had a bid rejected, looked a really small one! But most likely just testing the water.

I had heard a rumour that the club weren't actually interested in him after all, or thought he would be too expensive, not value for money enough. He has been injured an awful lot, and considering how much more physical the Premiership is, that would be something to think about.

Haven't followed vB very much but highlights from the UEFA Cup match last night had him looking pretty good. Schalke?!

Testing the water i'd imagine. Heard it was £1.4m, rubbish bid.

So would his arrival probably push King back into central defense, or would you go with the double defensive midfield that seems to be popular these days? If Davies and Dalmat are doing well on the wings, that could work, couldn't it?

Check this out :D

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,277-1059714,00.html

“We are going to hold talks in a few weeks and then see what happens,” Van Bommel, 26, said. “I know Tottenham is a big club and a sleeping giant. We played against Tottenham in pre-season and the crowd were really good. I have no clear view of the club at the moment and I am going to speak with Mr Pleat in a few weeks and see what they have got planned.”

Van Bommel has also attracted the interest of Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04, but he seems to favour White Hart Lane. “I know there have been rumours about me going to Germany, but the Tottenham fans can sleep easily. I would love to play in the Premiership because every team has internationals of the highest level and I know the league very well because it is shown on Dutch television every week. We see every match and every goal.”

Obviously still some way to get a transfer, but this is a very bright start.

Oh, and here's an extra bit of info on him in the article which makes enjoyable Spurs reading:

Van Bommel was accused of spitting at Thierry Henry, of Arsenal, last season when his club drew 0-0 at Highbury in a Champions League match.
He hates the A*senal and especially that arrogant and overrated twat Henry, who wouldn't want to spit at him :D
