this debate will actually determine the destiny of how this team will play and even the system it will useThat serious huh? Well I guess that deserves some latitude from the group.
But if this selection is so critical, would it not have been made earlier in your Team's selections?
We'll definetly be attuned to this pick. Be prepared for major criticism if its not a blockbuster.
But your destiny is clear...eventual defeat to Team C :)

Round 10 (week 10)
Selection 2
47th overall pick
Player: Sepp Maier, aka “Die Katze” (the cat)
Born: Feb. 28, 1944, Metten, Germany
Position: Goal Keeper
Career Span: 1958-1979
Nationality: German
Club Teams: TSV Haar (1958/1960), Bayern Munich (1960/1979)
National Team: 95 Caps
Career Highlights:
4 Budesliga Championships (1969, 1972/73/74)
4 German Cup (1966/67/69 e 1971)
3 European Cups (1974/75/76)
1 Cups Winners Cup (1967)
1 Intercontinental Cup (1976)
1 European Nations Cup (1972)
1 World Cup (1974)
3 German Player of the Year
Backstop the powerhouse W.German NT and Bayern Munich of the ‘70s.
Seems that Sepp’s first love was tennis, but ended up playing goalie at instances of a childhood friend (Beckenbauer). To soccer’s benefit, his tennis limitations led to one of the more accomplished goal keeping careers.
Maier was substitute goalkeeper in the 1966 World Cup without making an appearance, but he had established himself in the German goal by the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. West Germany reached the semifinals there, but two years later in the European Championship, Maier picked up his first winner’s medal for West Germany. In 1974 he was again the last line of defense in W.Germany’s WC winning side. He remained first choice keeper through WC 1978.
His exploits with Bayern Munich firmly cemented his place among the greats. Along with his buddy Beckenbauer, he went on to win 3 European Cups in succession.
Nicknamed “The Cat” for his elasticity, Maier was famous for his overlong shorts (pre-dating even Michael Jordan) and outsize gloves. He played 400 consecutive matches between 1966 and 1977 without missing a match. A car accident in 1979 ended his career at the age of 35.
The most telling sign of his prowess and effectiveness between the pipes could be his being awarded German Player of the Year three times in the seventies!
Our team so far: DiStefano, Garrincha, Platini, Facchetti, Mattaus, Ronaldo, Varela, Czibor, Santamaria, Maier

I can think of a player who'd be a logical choice for D at this point. Not really a 'Dutch total football' type of player, but I think he'd provide what they are lacking. I wonder if they are considering him. All I have to say is, with all the suspense, it better be one hell of a pick.:D
As far as C's pick, Maier is one of the obvious choices. I remember him from 1974. Not only a great player but he had style. So, it makes our choice easier by limiting our options.
It will be interesting to see how C organizes their defense, and especially how they envision the role of Matthaus. By now it seems obvious that Fachetti will play the left side.

Well I would assume that they would line up
------------Maier
RB Santamaria Varela Fachetti
Garrinha Mattheus Platini Czibor
-------Ronaldo Di Stefano
I have to say that Mattheus is massivley overrated as a defender, but as a two way midfielder he is superb. They will need a right back who can actually defend though as I think only Di Stefano and Mattheus can do anything from the rest.

I was a little disappointed in the pick of Maier. I can certainly think of at least one better keeper still out there. But it's all a matter of opinion I suppose.

He is the equal of the others in my view in pure ability, and has more silverware to show for (I know its not about just silverware). We were going to go with either him, his contemporary from a neighobouring country (who will probably be picked by week's end), or a surprise pick MCutler and I were partial to as well.
The curriculum finally swayed the vote -- hard to find a more decorated keeper, and who had seen the such a number of big games in big competitions.
Plus, when how rare does a GK win player of the year honours 3x (back when the Bundesliga had some all-time talent at work)?! Speaks volumes about his mastery of the position.

We can turn over the keys to the bus (ASF trademarked term) to either Platini or DiStefano; we can play either Platini or DiStefano as support striker, as they both scored a ton of goals; or we can move Matteus back and bring in a full-fledged forward to partner Ronaldo.
I've always been a fan of the 4-3-3.........

On the other hand, I think Varela would also be more effective if used as a central midfielder. That is why I am interested to see what they have in mind.

If you play Mattheus at the back it will be a big mistake. of course it all depends on how you define a 442 or a 433. Di Stefano goes up and down, Platini mainly attacks. However in my opinion it would be a big mistake if your next pick was not a defensive right back. One man certainly springs to mind for that.

There's your answer, I suspect. "His contemporary from a neighbouring country". I am sure we are talking about the same person and I rate him higher, that's all.

Well we were debating the merits of Maier and the "contemporary from a neighboring country", Ok I'm sick of talking in riddles, we all know it's Dino Zoff (it can't be a secret as to his identity- everybody here knows who he is!) and it was a close call. In the end we decided that when they did play head to head Maier was given greater recognition. He also won more titles and perhaps most importantly won the German Player of the Year award 3 times which is unprecedented, as far as I know, for a goalkeeper. That speaks volumes I believe about Sepp Maier's quality.
I apologize if I've broken some unwritten rule here of naming an unpicked player but come on, we all know we are referring to Dino Zoff. It's not as if his is a name people have forgotten and will now consider for their goalkeeper when they previously were not.

Never heard of him! Sounds Italian... might be a good choice for my team!
:D Just kidding Martin.

Still no post from Team D? This is either going to be the pick of the draft or the flop of the draft.

TEAM D
Dark Savante - captain, Spartak, Real Ray, Mobile
Round: 10 (Week 10)
Selection: 3
48th overall pick
Player: Wolfgang Overath
Born: Siegburg, Germany, 29 Sep 1943
Position: Left Mifield, LWB, Mid
Career Span:1960's - 1970's
Nationality: German
Caps/Goals: 81/17
Club Team: FC Koln
Profile / Stats:
World Cup: Winner 1974, Runner Up 1966 & Bronze 1970
German league title 1964
German Cup: 1968
Born in Siegburg, Wolfgang Overath, is regarded as one of the best midfielders in German soccer history. He began with SV Siegburg 04 as a boy, but moved to 1.FC Cologne at the age of 20. This was the club he remained faithful to through-out his career, playing almost 800 games in all competitions. He got a flying start at the club winning the Bundesliga in his first season as well as being called-up to the national team. He won further domestic cup titles with Cologne in 1968 and 1977.
Wolfgang was still only twenty-two by the time of the World Cup in 1966. Still he played an important role as West Germany reached the final and lost to England after extra time. Overath was virtually a complete midfield player. He was strong man-to-man, was blessed with a powerful left foot and seemed to peak his form to the important games. He was definitely a tournament player and in the 1970 World Cup, the international media voted him as the best midfield player in the tournament. West Germany took third place in Mexico with Overath scoring the winning goal in the bronzematch against Uruguay.
His international career ended after the 1974 World Cup on home soil. It was a perfect way to end a great career by crowning it with a World Cup title. Once again Overath was on top of his game through-out the entire tournament and also knocked in two goals, against Australia with a left footed rocket and also against Sweden. Overath became the only man in World Cup history, along with Beckenbauer, to win gold, silver and bronze in the World Cup.
He continued to play for three more seasons in Cologne before retiring in 1977 lifting the German Cup trophy having beaten Hertha Berlin in the final. It was the last game of his career.
Decision: 2:2
