We're about 2/3 of the way through the Development Academy regular season. I believe the top three teams from each group go on to the playoffs. The standings can be a bit skewed due to games in hand.

Here's the explanation on how to get to the playoffs

Here's the U18 standings

http://ussda.demosphere.com/Standings/2008-2009/10876681.html

As MLS teams go in the U18 age group

Chicago and Colorado are struggling in their division. Chicago is 6-3-3 overall, but just 0-1-2 in their division(the standings are tallied by division play rather than overall). Colorado Rush leads that group with 14 points and a 4-0-2 record

In the Great Lakes division, Columbus is 2 points off the top spot with 19 points from 9 games played...there's 4 teams playing for 3 playoff spots in this group, though I'd imagine all 4 teams at the top will get in with wild cards.

In the Texas Division, FCD U18's are in 3rd out of 8 teams with 19 points and a 5-2-4 record, however, they are in decent shape as Andromeda and Texans, the two teams above FCD are on 23 points but with 1 and 2 more games played respectively. The Juniors have a hugh game coming up against 4th place Solar on May 3rd. Their other two games left in the division are against the bottom two teams, so they have a real shot at qualifying for the playoffs.

In the Mid-Atlantic Division, DC United leads the way with 22 points and a 7-2-1 record through 10 games. PA Classics is 3 points behind with a game in hand, however. The NY Red Bulls are 6th in the 8 team division with 8 points from 8 games.

In the hotly contested Northeast Division, the NE Revolution are 5th out of 9 teams, but just 3 points seperate 5th through 1st. Unfortunately for the Revs, however, first place Albertson is 3 points ahead of them, but has 4 games in hand:eek:

In the So Cal division, Chivas USA is 3rd out of 9 teams, six points behind leaders LAFC Chelsea. Unfortunately for them, Chelsea has 2 games in hand on them as well. The Galaxy lag behind in 7th with 12 points from 10 games.

Moving on to U16, here are their standings

http://ussda.demosphere.com/Standings/2008-2009/10876678.html

In the Frontier Division, Chicago Fire are 1 point from the top with 2 games in hand on first place Real Colorado...there's a ton still to be decided in this group with just 3 games played for Chicago so far. The Rapids are lagging behind with 4 points from 7 games.

In the Great Lakes Division, Columbus is 8 points off the top with 11 points from 9 games played...probably no playoffs for them in this group.

In the Texas Division, the FCD Juniors are absolutely dominating this group with a 9-0-2 record. They're 9 points up on second placed Andromeda and boast a gaudy 35 GF and 9 GA. They're 13-1-4 in overall Development Academy play.

In the Mid-Atlantic Division, New York Red Bulls are dominating with a 7-0-1 record after 8 games and an equally impressive 14 GF and 5 GA. DC United is still in the hunt for a playoff spot in 5th but just 4 points behind second place.

In the Northeast Division, the Revolution are 6th out of 9 but are just 4 opints behind 3rd place so they still have a shot at playoffs.

In the Socal Division, LA Galaxy are 3rd with 19 points from 10 games but things are very closely contested. 5 points seperate 1st through 6th so it's still anyone's game in that division. Chivas USA lags in 7th 10 points off the top.

Hope ya'll enjoyed that little recap, it's almost playoff time in the Dev Academy. The playoffs are June 26-29 in Greensboro, NC and Finals week is July 11-18th in LA.

I think it makes sense that the MLS teams are appearing to do better at the younger ages, since they haven't been around for as long, the players at the upper levels haven't been together for such a long time.

On a somewhat unrelated note, is there a site anywhere which discusses which of these teams have actual connections to European Clubs, or are they mostly copy cat names?

Copy cat names. A few have minimal connections...

I'll check back after next weekend. I'm only really going to focus on MLS teams though until the playoffs start.

So really they just use their "association" as a lure for the kids? Look we have a deal with AS MOnaco (like that's a big draw or something ), join our team!

When it means that Monaco pays all the fees and you can play for free, you can bet your ass that is a draw.

Perhaps the most significant aspect of the partnership as it begins this summer is that Monaco will cover all expenses of players and coaches for the U16 and U18 USSF Developmental Academy teams. Among many positive responses to the new USSF venture, prohibitive costs have typically been a detracting factor. As with some MLS-affiliated programs, Magic will now be able to offer participation in the program free of charge.

I was only aware of the Monaco one with Magic, but I wouldn't be surprised if the other deals were very similar.

*edit* for some reason it bleeps out "**********************." Just replace the asterisks with ********************** and it will send you to the full article.

That's what I was wondering, if it meant anything, or if Random foreign teams just say, sure use our name, it's a big draw type of thing.

Thanks for pointing that out.
