Speaking of that last request, I got an email from some guys who are trying to do statistical work on that "other" football. You know, the one where people actually use their feet. They don't have a website, but they do have a portion of the forum at the website Big Soccer, so if you want to discuss "soccermetrics" and support the effort to spread the analytical revolution to other sports check out their work.

Many thanks to Aaron from Footballoutsiders.com, going forward their work can definately be an inspiration and maybe even a few good ideas thrown in there in terms of how to attack some of the problems we look at.

Hey, nice job there maxim, it'll be interesting to see if anybody finds their way over. Looks like a pretty respectable site they've got there.

I didn't post this on the other thread, but I'd never seen the hockey site, and thought it was a very interesting find. I haven't gone through it much yet, but it looked a lot more applicable than the baseball and football sites (not that they're not great in their own rights).

Yeah my initial reaction was that the hockey stuff would be most applicable, simply because of of the similarities in the games and the lack of scoring. Hockey may have a leg up on soccer for already recording more discrete events. Don't they record number of checks, passes completed and stuff like that, or is it just in video games? I haven't checked out the hockey site much though. In an ironic twist, one of the contributors to Football Outsiders is the webmaster for another one of my favorite sites/boards Boston Sports Media Watch, had no idea.

Well, the link from Football Outsiders is how I found my way here... We had a discussion back there a while back that involved soccer and of course it devolved into "my game is better than your game", but I found there were a dozen or so of us who like the beautiful game, so there may be more of us coming over...

Val Thats phenominal, welcome to the boards Val. I personally love football, think it's a terrific game. However I''ve found that since I've begun to watch so much soccer the stop and go action of football doesn't hold my interest as much. Certainly too within the context of statistics footballs probably easier than soccer because of the number of discrete events.

Well, actually your avatar indicates the real sport for sabremetrics, baseball. I started being blown away by Bill James in the 80s, and while I find stats much less predictive in football, I'm interested in seeing what we can make of soccer...

Welcome to the boards Val. We'd love to have as many people as possible from the other site come over and check us out. It's difficult to apply Sabermetrics to soccer, but I think it can be done with a little creativity.
