R for Roxy Music: Ladytron, live on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Wish they showed more Eno but he gets his due toward the end.
Well, let's keep dancing... Mary Poppins -- Step in Time Really, really love Dick van Dyke. If you haven't heard this clip of van Dyke playing on NPR's Wait... Wait... Don't Tell Me, you'll want to give yourself 10 minutes. http://www.npr.org/2010/12/25/132315045/dick-van-dyke-plays-not-my-job
OK, the link to the podcast seems to be not working. Nor is the edit function... But I got the story by clicking on the download button...
Thanks to my daughter's Julie Andrews obsession and my son's gravitation to only this portion of that film, I've seen this clip a shocking number of times. And I have to say still it's still kind of amazing. It's just a fantastic piece of choreography. There's a very nice story about the number on the bonus DVD, where the choreographers relay how the number was going to be cut to a few minutes or less. So they arranged a live run through of what they had been rehearsing for Walt -- and he gave the number the 9 minutes you see here, which is a pretty hefty chunk in a film. Also, Dick Van Dyke had never really danced before this film -- which is pretty jaw-dropping. Note the 2:25 mark, where he pulls off two tumbling rolls straight into some nice steps, all while holding his own next to professional dancers. Not too shabby. PS: I can also admit to seeing the Broadway version (more than once) where they can't really replicate this number, but they make up for it with a nicely elaborate piece of theater magic.
I think I mentioned once before my parents took me to see Julia Andrews do Victor Victoria on Broadway and even as a young kid who wasn't really into musicals I thought it was pretty cool.
http://www.wruv.org Her show is "No Life In the West" 6-8 EST on Tuesday nights so you can tune in tonight actually. Furthermore if you find her in the "Schedule" you can stream the previous weeks show as well.
U Will be for lyric soprano Ute Ziemer, here singing Schwipslied with the Vienna Philharmonic "Schwipslied" tranlates roughly as "the tipsy song." Can't find the lyrics, but you get the idea.
Once More with Feeling, otherwise known as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode... They Got the Mustard Out!
W for Woody Guthrie, So Long It's Been Good to Know You. This song has been running through my head for two days straight, ever since we made the decision to have our family cat euthanized (which we did yesterday). Not exactly a direct correlation to the dust bowl scenario, but the sentiment works.
Sorry 'bout the departure. And I love that song so much. In fact I may love this version even more -- it popped up unexpectedly on one of my kids CDs -- Dan Zanes featuring John Doe. It's not on YouTube somehow, but if you search "Dan Zanes John Doe" on Spotify, it'll show up.
X is for one of the best Xmas/Chanukah songs in recent years. Maybe ever. Missile Toe by The Mosquitos
I may have posted this before... but it's my favorite Christmas song: Oye to the World - Covered by No Doubt: (alright... they spell it "Oi", but I prefer the JK Rowling spelling... and that way it fits in list)
And now for our number.... Party at Ground Zero by Fishbone And since zero is both a number and not, someone can post another one if they've been sitting on one for awhile.
