You think Carlos is going to leave his Assistant job at the biggest club in the world and the top of their game to come take over the head coach for a bottom of the league MLS team? Would I love it? Yes. Will it happen? No way.

The guy has been begging to come be the USMNT coach and interviewed for several other MLS teams (I know he applied and interviewed for the Rapids job in 2004).

Its not totally a crack dream.

I was un-aware that he interviewed for other MLS teams. I could understand the USMNT, cause thats a bit more in the spot light, a bit... Well here is to wishful thinking.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

While the rest of your post was pretty informative and well thought out, you couldn't be more wrong with your assessment of Michael. Frankly, if we had him, we wouldn't have to be forcing as many square pegs in round holes and our midfield would be much younger.

And, didn't he used to be with Real Madrid? If their breakup wasn't too acrimonious, this could be a nice connection to the mothership...

Supposively he was fired by Real Madrid, so thats not a good thing, relationship wise.

Queiroz was also the coach of the MetroStars about 10 years ago, so there is more of a MLS connection here.

As long as we are talking Real Madrid, I think Capello is going to be fired even if they win the league this year. Wonder if he could be compelled to come over?

While Queiroz has shown some interest and has coached in MLS in the past, I doubt that Capello would be interested in MLS either to move to the States or for the money.

Of course Queiroz and coaches like him who do have interest in MLS might not come because of the low pay, Capello has never shown interest. My guess is that Inter Milan might come calling for him, but thats OT.

If Capello came over, at least we would be organized defensively.

And, if you aren't pulling your weight, off to the bench you go.

I know it's not realistic, but just thought it would be fun to throw it out there.

Fair point, but I've never been a fan of his, it's all personal taste I guess.

Anyone who doesn't have some sort of weird obsession with players he coached when they were 15 would be nice. We've all seen how well the Ellinger kids (including Mathis) have worked out.

Were I Checketts and Pastorini, my first phone call would be to Robin Fraser.

It would likely take a guaranteed multi-year contract with a big salary (harder to fire a coach making a lot of guaranteed money) to get him to take the job.

But based on the way he thought out the game as a player, the way he made his teammates better, the way he mentored younger players, the way he's so respected by folks in the American soccer community, I think he'd be worth making that kind of commitment.

Oh, and RSL would be able to get a little positive PR for hiring the first black coach in MLS history.

I don't think any of us would object to Fraser being coach of RSL. In fact, we discussed him extensively last year when we had the second of what is now our third annual discussion of who we'd like to see hired in place of Ellinger.

So, your raising of Fraser's name is a welcome addition to this <shudder> third annual thread.

Does he have a National A license? Is it required?

Well if I guess if he puts his past U/15 discoveries on his professional team then it proves he was right in selecting them over other players to begin with (because they became professional so they must be good)? Yes this is warped logic but I beleive that is basically what he is doing, picking up his old favorites to prove he was great at selecting and developing youth into professionals (he was not even good at it let alone great). Any coach that cannot let go of his personal favorites when it becomes obvious they are cutting it is bound for failure as we are seeing with Ellinger.

This the first season that Pope has looked worth the money. Previous seasons I was convinced he looked at his play on RSL as practice and fitness building for his US National Team obligations. This season, that is off the table, and it shows in his play for RSL. He genuinely looks dedicated to putting his best on the field for RSL. And, he has saved numerous goals this season already.
