I was checking out this video interview with the Mexican U20 coach, Chris Cuellar, son of Leo. He went to HS and college in the US and might be a Yank (his dad was a player with the SD Sockers at about the time he was born & was a college coach in the US after that). Chris is a volunteer coach at USC and lives in Mexico City. Undoubtedly, being bilingual and bicultural helps in his recruitment efforts.
The Mexican U17s have been called into camp prior to the WC in March. One player, who has been in Mexican teams before, but not listed in this thread: Jacqueline Crowther from California. Familiar faces on the roster: Emily Alvarado Vanessa Flores Jessica Moreno Eva Gonzalez Janae Gonzalez Kimberly Rodriguez Briana Woodall Jaquelin Garcia https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...14016848.77368.327347964017673&type=1&theater
Mexico has called up their squad for the Four Nations Tournament in China and the usual suspect Mexican-Americans are on there, but it looks like one of the standouts from the U20 tournament is on there. I think this would be her first senior cap opportunity. Jazmin Aguas http://www.femexfut.org.mx/portalv2/aspx/WEB_DetalleNoticia.aspx?pnIDNtca=41962
I should always look for funky names on the Mexican rosters. I missed: Jazmin Ponce Born in LA Played at UArizona (finished in 2013) This would be her first cap opportunity as well. She's a forward. Interesting that the Mexican-American talent tends to be up top. http://www.wildcat.arizona.edu/blog...layer-earns-tryout-with-mexican-national-team And she has a bio at USSF. Not sure if she has any U20 caps for the US. http://www.ussoccer.com/teams/u-20-wnt/p/jazmin-ponce.aspx
Not really. She may have tied for most goals in the tournament, but they all came against the minnows in group play. She was practically invisible against both Costa Rica and the US.
Slightly off topic, but worth noting that the ties between U.S. soccer and the Philippines will be growing. Check out the new men's coach: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...ooley-selected-lead-philippines-national-team
Paloma Zermeño tore her ACL against the US. She had surgery this week, so a good chance she isn't ready for the U20 WC in August.
Jenny Bindon of New Zealand has announced her retirement: http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/news/newsid=2274644/index.html
what's "equity in player selection"? not sure such a thing exists. it's always about who the coach likes. lots of good players have been benched or discarded by one coach only to be picked up by the new manager. not suggesting chris is the man for the job. maybe he is, maybe not. but his choice doesn't necessarily result in any less "equity in player selection".
Good thing I laugh a lot bc it's no football for me...getting ankle surgery in the next week. Will keep you posted! pic.twitter.com/LgqSqpxRZz— Ali Riley (@RileyThree) February 5, 2014
Philippine NT players have signed with colleges (seems backward, doesn't it?): Camille Wilson (University of San Francisco) Olivia Schmitt (University of Illinois) Carissa Christensen (Texas Tech) (uncapped) http://www.malditaspilipinasfutbol.com/wilson-schmitt-christensen-nli/
Probably both, although for the second part it must be said that parents often have a somewhat exaggerated view of their children's abilities.
Just found out about this one during the US-Russia friendly: Ana Chevtchenk U of Penn frosh Dual citizen This is her first senior cap. She played for Russia at the U-15, U-17 and U-19 level. http://blogs.dailypennsylvanian.com...evtchenko-called-up-to-russian-national-team/
I couldn't find her in the UEFA database, until I did a little rework of her name (damn Cyrillic alphabet transliteration). Anastasia Shevchenko National team record in UEFA competitions Team-------------P---GS Russia WU-19---6---0 Russia WU-17---6---0 UEFA competition debut: UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship (First qualifying round) 26/09/10: Russia 3-2 Greece She is part of the WWC pool for Russia, so it will be interesting to see if she is called up for their next qualifying matches in April.
Another goalkeeper: Tatiana Saunders Dartmouth College Jr. Played on England's U-17 national team and U-19 national team. All White Kit says she is a "New York native" but actually she was born in Israel according to her college bio. Father looks like he has worked for the UN for a very long time, so it's possible that she doesn't have US citizenship, but I figured it makes sense to document her here since it might come up again. She did play ODP, but that's no guarantee of citizenship. She has 4 caps with the U19s and 2 with the U17s: http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/S/Tatiana-Saunders#
El Salvador is bringing in players for their senior team for a camp, and they are drawing from the U16s and up. They have a special category of players "from the United States" and 3 players from their U17 roster are listed: Bianca Aguilar-Torres (NY) 4/1/98 Elaily Hernandez-Respresa (Calif) 5/27/00 Sofia Alfaro-Tripp (Calif) 3/25/97 I wasn't able to confirm the citizenship of any of them.
