(feel free to submit an alternate thread title...) The season is mercifully over - time to focus our collective attention on this summer's international football feast, the Euro 2012. I have particular interest in the tournament, since I'm gonna be there. (we have tickets to Croatia-Italy in Poznan and Spain-Croatia in Gdansk). Germany has to be the tournament favorite, particularly with Puyol out for Spain. I have high hopes for host Poland, and I guess I have to be a Croatia fan by default, since I'm seeing two of their group games. Cannot wait. Just booked a flight out of L.A to Istanbul, where I'll spend a week, then fly to Warsaw to catch Poland-Russia in the fan zone. Gonna be nuts!
Spain are favorites. No question about that. Germany and Holland will be battling for the right to challenge them. Early news is that Rio is out. Kyle Walker is out. Micah Richards will be left behind.
I'll be primarily rooting for Germany, Denmark and Ireland. And for the opponents of Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.
I have a soft spot for Croatia, as I married into a Croatian family. Except when they play Australia. And yes- jealous much of ASAA.....
Carroll is in, Stevie is captain, Glen Johnson, Downing round out the Liverpool contingent, Henderson is on standby.
April Fools? Though to be fair, that probably speaks to England's lack of a true left-sided option after Ashley Young (and Rooney is probably the best English left winger if he weren't a better striker). Surprised Defoe was picked ahead of Sturridge, given the latter's versatility.
England is finally going to not have the weight of the world on their shoulders. I'm excited and my hopes are low!
Honestly, I think the Hodgson appointment is the smartest thing the FA has done since hiring Bobby Robson. It's time to stop thinking of England as a team that challenges for major titles, and as a plucky underdog, albeit one with a crapload of funds and infrastructure.
Not only don't we have a manager but our new guy will have half a team on crutches to work around next season.
What will happen - Gerrard pulls his hammy in camp, Jordan Henderson flies into Poland on the eve of the tournament. He tears his ACL in the first group match.
I am for Ireland but they will be done after the group round. England will come second in their group and lose in the first knock out round. Something's never change. But I think a Rooney and Carroll Could make an intriguing strike force
I was only trying to jokingly suggest that England wouldn't make it out of the group stage. Didn't mean to actually question whether or not he'll get injured. But since everyone seems to have a cystral ball which says he'll return from the Euro's as a maimed invalid, let me pose this question: if he can't stay healthy longer than a month at a time, why do we continue to pay his wages?
He has shown it this season! He would play a big game, then pick up a knock or slight niggle then be rested for another couple of games... But the reason why we keep paying his wages, when he plays he is often the best person playing that position. Play Am, yeah one of the best in the world, box-to-box still one of the best, dm not disciplined enough to play there full time, but is capable of putting a shift in! That's the conundrum with him, when he can play he should play!
BTW, I'm willing to bet the British Olympic team could beat the senior Euro 12 team if they faced each other in a match. I'm guessing Henderson (assuming the inevitable Gerrard muscle injury doesn't occur before the tournament begins) and Kelly are in for Team GB.
