I never really thought a great defense was necessary to win a WC. If if was good enough, you had a chance. I always felt the midfield was key.

The 94 team and the 2010 team had a great defense. The 02 team I think had a good enough defense IMO, it was enough because of the offensive firepower of the three R's. That defense was prone to some lapse in judgement at times. Right now, I think we have a good enough defense, it just the rest of the stuff have to fall into place.
I'd sort of agree. The defensive strength in 2002 was Scolari's formation, might not have been good enough for the job without that.
That and also let's be honest, we didn't really play any great teams in 2002. FFS we had Roque Junior in defense. That says enough.
Those of us who remember 1982 are still scarred by those defensive calamities, we would disagree with you.
The 82 team IMO didn't need a great defense. I think a better system could of mask their defensive frailties.
The problem was it was so heavily weighted towards attack the defence were as good as non existent. We must NEVER make that mistake again. I don`t see how the system would have made any difference?
The system was too attack minded just like 2006 team was. It lacked balance. 2 attacking Wb's, 2 attacking midfielders and 2 forwards
