Strong team from UEFA going to the U20s. And great to see the dream team back together for the Confederations Cup!
Whatever people think of Howard Webb's abilities as a referee, I'll be the first to say that I'm not his greatest fan, when it's all said and done he might have the best "resume" of any referee ever. Two World Cups, World Cup Final, CL Final, two Confederation Cups, two European Championships, FA Cup Final, League Cup Final, plus numerous knockout games in the aforementioned tournaments above. Only thing really missing is a Europa League Final and he will have the complete set. Plus, he'll end up, probably, refereeing over 300 games in one of the best leagues in the world when it's all said and done. I wonder if he'll keep going once he steps down from the FIFA list.
Official list was published today by FIFA. http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tou...atchofficialsforfifaconfederationscup2013.pdf

Interesting. The timing of the Confederations Cup pretty much means Nishimura and Irmatov could only have been on the June 4 games, which the AFC didn't elect to do. You've got some pretty big matches in June and some--relatively--inexperienced referees on them.
The same goes for CAF. Haimoudi doesn't have a qualifier in June due to Confederations Cup. And I believe that UEFA officials won't either. I can't say that these AFC officials are inexperienced. Yes they haven't attend WC like Irmatov or Nishimura but the are not inexperienced. Bashir for example has 9 qualifiers until now, more that any other referee.
Finally UEFA appointments as well. 07.06 Lithuania - Greece: BENQUERENCA (POR) Portugal - Russia: SKOMINA (SVN) Albania - Norway: COLLUM (SCO) Montenegro - Ukraine: GRAFE (GER) Iceland - Slovenia: ZWAYER (GER) Finland - Belarus: HACMON (ISR) Latvia - Bosnia: DEAN (ENG) Ireland - Faroe Islands: GESTRANIUS (FIN) Armenia - Malta: HUNTER (NIR) Liechtenstein - Slovakia: STROMBERGSSON (SWE) Croatia - Scotland: BORBALAN (ESP) Belgium - Serbia: LANNOY (FRA) Czech Republic - Italy: MOEN (NOR) Austria - Sweden: ROCCHI (ITA) Azerbaijan - Luxemburg: FABIAN (HUN) Moldova - Poland: TEIXIERA (ESP) Switzerland - Cyprus: MAZZOLENI (ITA) 11.06 Sweden - Faroe Islands: YORDANOV (BUL) Belarus - Finland: KOVARIK (CZE) Denmark - Armenia: NIKOLAEV (RUS)
For reasons that defy logic, the appointment for the single UEFA August qualifier has also been announced already: 13.08-13 - Northern Ireland : Russia - HAGEN (NOR)
This match has been postponed in March and was re-scheduled for August. The appointment is the same with the initial one.
Not a qualifier- but qualifier warmup- anyone know who the crew is for US-Germany at RFK on Sunday? (Sorry if it's posted elsewhere, but I didn't see it)
World Cup: Ethiopia admits using an ineligible player http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22955798 Should the referee team have had a role to play here to make sure it didn't come to this? I realize it's up to the teams ultimately, but it seems like something the referee crew or match delegate, etc might have been able to have on their radar in a match at this level where there is so much information available on the teams. Apparently there were similar issues in two other CAF matches: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22930519
You would think so, but even though it's a World Cup qualifier, that Ethiopia vs. Botswana match is a glorified amateur match. The referees were from Uganda. I have no idea about their experience level or ability, but I doubt the CAF would put one of their better referees on Botswana vs. Ethiopia. Even though it has World Cup next to it's name, it does not mean it's at the same level of organization as a Spain vs. France World Cup qualifier. Just like all teams are not equal, neither are all referees. In some parts of the world, some FIFA referees wouldn't even be 5s here and some of our PRO/FIFA referees wouldn't do first division in Spain, Italy or England. The standards of professionalism at some of these games are vary low. It maybe hard to grasp or understand, but that is the case.
Here's the problem: what if you intervene and you're wrong, thereby denying an eligible player from participating? If the referee crew or delegate didn't have direct information, from FIFA or CAF, notifying them of suspension, then this is in no way on them.
I agree with MR. The role of the referee is to follow the mandates given regarding players, not to research them. It's more bewildering to me that a country wouldn't be able to keep track of who was eligible.
I agree that the responsibility should not be on the referee crew, but if in their preparation for the game the crew noted that a player would be ineligible, and then were given a roster listing that player, do you think it would be inappropriate for a member of the crew to float the eligibility question past the the coach?
Thanks kayakhorn, found the question I was trying to ask. So is this over the line to run this past a coach, or is this preventative officiating?
IMO it would be fully appropriate to ask the question -- but I have no idea what those guys actually get before games at that level.
This one shouldn't be hard. Any level of competition, the crew should be given a list of players ineligible for disciplinary reasons. Heck we get this in youth leagues most times. If a player is on the roster AND on that list, he doesn't play. End of story. It's more probable that either that list was wrong. If there's a list that's wrong, or no list, then the referee crew should accept the roster. A bigger issue would be if the team had a player wear a different shirt.
I disagree. I'm all for less administrative stuff to deal with as a referee. Let the coaches and administrators do just that, administrate. I'll blow the whistle or twirl a flag.
If I see a player listed as ineligible, but the team tells me it is in error, I simply allow the player to participate and inform the team that I will provide full details in my match report to the league.
