I wish they would stop calling ppl from the US "Gringos". I'm part Native American part Hispanic and I find that highly offensive.

Yeah, it's a bit weird to see in a soccer context, considering how many of our players are clearly not "gringos."

I actually had no idea that "gringo" was in use south of Mexico.

Re: Diego Chavarri at Sporting Cristal

A lot of name calling. A lot of - "he hasn't even been called for Peru, and he thinks he's gonna get called for The U.S.?!!" type comments. A lot of "he's a traitor. Get out of Peru!" Some "the soccer in The U.S. isn't any good" sprinkled in.

It's not really worth trying to translate word for word. Anyone know what "pavo" means when used as an insult? I know the literal translation, but not this colloquial one.

Well, time will tell whether this kid is the next Timmy Chandler or the next Vincenzo Bernardo.
My guess is if this kid was that solid Peru would be pushing him hard to dress up for them. Unless they are highly nationalistic and aren't interested in players with "hedging" attitudes in terms of national teams.

He has only been playing with the first team for a few months now so obviously he wouldn't be getting too much notice from the Peruvian Federation. So far he has looked very good offensively and seems to have some interest from the Dutch club Vitesse. He is somebody worth following either way.

Let's be fair to both of them. Chavarri has already played first-team, first-division soccer. Bernardo hasn't. But Chavarri is also a year older.

It's an insult to describe players or fans from the team Sporting Cristal. It's like calling them "nancies," to put it lightly.

its not the top 5, its just 5 guys u should look at , there are atleast 10 players that are younger and better than chavarri. for example the best one in peru right now is cristian cueva that just got called up to the national team and he is not even here.

Chavarri went a full 90 for Sporting Cristal today in a 2-1 loss to Melgar FBC

Thanks for the update. I was barely looking for any updates on his club status.

Is there still interest from Vitesse?

He is in the last year of his contract but I think he will probably sign an extension wiht Cristal.

The interest from Vitesse was real but that ankle injury suffered in March and then the reinjury by coming back too soon hurt his chances at a summer transfer.

Wasn't in the starting 11 against Alianza Lima. I am actually a Peruvian-American, just curious as to where you guys would rank Peru's league against MLS?

he is playing in the reserve team now, cristal bought slot of experience players because they are in danger of relagation so i doubt chavarri would get playing time anytime soon. peruvian advincula the one that was rumored to go to netherlands with chavarii is now rumored to go to liverpool after his good copa america

A player named Diego Chavarri came on as a sub for the Argentine club Almirante Brown in early February. Not 100% sure it's our guy, or that he's signed:

Almirante Brown: César Monasterio; Federico León, Hernán Ortiz, Jesús Nievas, Ezequiel Garré; Iván Centurión, Sergio Meza Sánchez, Daniel Olmedo, Diego Cisterna; Diego Chavarri; y Daniel Vega. DT: Blas Giunta.
