Is Wondo the primary PK or FK taker for the Earthquakes? Cause it would definitely be easier to reach the record. If Wondo breaks the record or say scores 24-25 goals this season, how much will SJ have to pay him to keep him or would he be worth 500K-1million to seel abroad?
He's scored on 3 out of 5 attempts on PKs (missed one after a re-take). Khari Stephenson took the other San Jose PK. http://www.sjearthquakes.com/stats/season
Wondolowski scored a PK goal on 9/15 against Chivas USA, that now gives him 19 goals with 6 games remaining. He'd need to score 9 goals in that time to break the record. He's scored on 4 of 6 PK attempts this year.
Yikes. Maybe someone else should be taking PKs for San Jose. Chasing a personal record is nice, but I think they'd rather have the ball in the back of the net.
One of those was re-taken after initially scoring the first one for someone entering the area too soon.
Which is maddening considering about a dozen, "Why wasn't that called?" situations. But on topic, one game against Portland is in Portland, which may not be to Wondo's benefit. Outside of a few games they are stingy at home. Only three times at home has Portland conceded more than one goal (CUSA [2], RSL [3], LA [5]).
Traditionally SJC hasn't had a lot of PKs called for them, so this year is a bit of an anomaly for Wondo stat padding. I don't like the way Wondo takes PKs (generally with power up the middle)... I would be ok with someone else.
Nothing but luv for that Native Indian Polock Californian! He is a class footballer. He earned a place to start and I would like to think Lassiter's record can't stand forever Chris. If one takes a step back and looks, his career is one of MLS's most original in the making.
Wondo adds goals #20 and #21 against Portland after coming on as a second half substitute, meaning he needs 7 goals in the last 5 games to break the record.
Whether he gets there or not, this is the most for a golden-boot winner (probably not too early to say that) since Ruiz's 24 in 2002. There is, of course, that little side issue that they only played 28 games in 2002. San Jose just went past that.
If you want to play that game, Ruiz got his 24 goals in just 26 games, two short of the number that was played that season. In other words, nearly everyone misses games.
A different record that Wondo appears poised to tie or break is the most goals scored over a 3 year period. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but by my calculations here are the top 10 3 year performances in the history of MLS in terms of goals scored: Arce 1996-1998 56 goals Lassiter 1996-1998 55 goals Wondo 2010-2012 55 goals (with 5 games remaining) Razov 1998-2000 48 goals Twellman 2002-2004 47 goals Angel 2007-2009 45 goals John 1998-1999 44 goals (he only played 2 years in MLS) Moreno 1997-1999 42 goals DeRosario 2009-2011 42 goals Savarese 1997-1999 41 goals Serna 1999-2001 41 goals Emilio 2007-2009 41 goals So if he gets 1 more goal he'll tie Arce, and 2 more goals will give him the record.
Has a player ever outscored an entire team? Wondolowski: 21 Chivas USA: 21 Chivas do have a game in hand, though.
No they haven't, in the years of the big goals (lassiters 27, ruiz' 24) no one was in the 20s in total team goals (you have to remember the goals per game average was much higher across the league than it is now).
