I wonder how long this season will be ?

Tonights episode? One of those starting many threads....and a whole bunch of characters appearing without much explanation. Who was the relative of Daenerys that appeared? I don't remember him from last season, but I'm assuming he'll be around more this year. And there's another woman that popps up -- wife of Stannis Baratheon (actually an article says she's not his wife).

The midget's concubine is another character that it's not obvious what she's there for.

    What relative of Dany's?

Mel is not Stannis's wife. You actually see his wife standing next to him during the burning of the 7.

I love this show, perhaps even more so then the source material, but I had two major problems with the premiere.

First, they should have stuck to the the true beginning of A Clash of Kings, and started the action with Mel, Stannis and Davos at Dragonstone. It would of been a beautifully mysterious and surreal way to start the new season. I also think it was sloppy how they handled the attempted assassination.

My second major problem was that there is no center to the show with Ned gone. It should be Jon, but it is going to be hard to establish that when you only give him about 5 minutes an episode.

I fear we are going to end up spending way too much time with the Lannisters or Dan when the Stark kids are the heart of the show.

The series is nearly 2 decades old. It is your own fault. :p

One of the problems in the books (I stopped reading after book 3) was the characters were all split up and it took forever to get back to another character's story. You would read one chapter about Jon and then had to wait another hundred pages to advance his story. I fear that the show is going to have the same problem moving forward.

I completely agree. The series lost it center, especially after Swords. Martin has always had a problem with writing far too much superfluous thinly veiled padding, but you get over it when you around the characters worth reading about.

I can't read A Feast of Crows. Too many pointless POVs that take us away from the characters that matter (most of which aren't even in the book) and just having material that adds nothing to the story whatsoever.

The show has the chance to right the narrative problems of the book. Keeping the narrative tight and focused on the Stark children first and foremost, even if that means inventing material. Instead they seem determined to explore material surrounding the less interesting Lannisters.

Anything to keep us away from Miss Fire and Blood.

Martin is a lazy writer. It is not just that he has introduced too many unnecessary characters or plots but also made a lot of the major characters less likable over the last couple of books.

Like who? I pretty much like the same characters now as I did when it started, with the exception of Dany, who I can't stand.

My problem is he keeps stalling the interesting characters and their arcs by having them do the most mundane crap, so he can write about the nobodies.
