Was this necessary? His last name is Lee. An error would say Dong-Gook.

You'd think they'd err on the safe side this week.

    Yeah, tell me about it.
This was definitely intentional. In the story itself, he's identified as Lee so it's not like they didn't know which one was his last time.

Those of you with screenshots of the offensive headline, don't trash them yet.

    got this from Twitter:

I'm thinking that ESPN uses a 'bot to generate some of their stories. The computer writes the story/headline all based on stats/facts from the game. A lot of news sites do that these days....but just weird that if it was the case, the computer was able to decipher LDG's last name in the story but not for the headline. In addition, I'd think ESPN would be highly sensitive these days after the Lin incident....

tweeted it over to the AAJA. They were wondering if that was part of his name etc. Told them it was, but never saw a headline referring to Park Ji-sung as simply 'Sung'.

Got this from a message board I visit...but they were wondering, what will ESPN or ESPN 'bot do with Vinny Del Negro's name in the future....:D

Doesn't matter if there's a bot to generate it. ESPN should have a proofreader/copyeditor who would have caught the inconsistency. You don't call him Lee in the article and then Gook in the headline. Looks sloppy.

I'm not saying that the same level of outrage is warranted for this slip, as "Chink in the Armor," (I mean, "Gook" is in his name). But it does show that ESPN doesn't fact-check/proof any of their stuff. Looks really bad for a news agency.

Yup, you'd think any time a slur/swear word/anything offensive is used in a headline (even if it's part of a person's name), that ESPN/Soccernet would have a system that would alarm the editors to at least take a look at it.

Just waiting for a Vinny Del Negro headline fiasco to come out of Bristol....

Its irresponsible given the beating that they have taken this week. The fact that a supposedly aware editing staff would allow this error to go through is the most offensive part.

And the fact that they changed without an apology

    Who is Michael Kim?

I'm not letting it drop unless they post a public apology on their website. I don't care how and why it happened. It's unacceptable. This incident will not get the same kind of attention that Lin's did but that doesn't make it any less offensive. I thought about letting it go but twice in the same week by the same mainstream media company shows all the progress America has made as a multi-cultural (and mult-ethnic) society is a farce.

There's also @JenChang88, writer for sports illustrated. They changed the article, so you'll need to tweet the screenshots

An ESPN blogger (non-soccer blogger) contacted me and said he was going to ask about this. He saw all the screenshots. If I hear anything else, will update.

what type of action do you guys want?

    Punishment?
    Public apology?
Let this never happen again. Fix your system (behind close doors)?
