Why don't foreigners care about the Brazilian League?

    Most Brasil games - right now Brasileirao A and B - are being broadcast by PFC TV, a channel owned by Globo and available for $20/month, or $30/month for both Globo TV Internacional and PFC in some areas. Recently some Brasil games have also been available in GOLTV.

    I assume all these are available to viewers in Europe, but I don't know for sure. Globo also carries a few Brasileirao games, and both PFC and Globo are in Portuguese, so these are not very popular in non-portuguese speaking countries.

    Only if more English/French/German/Chinese/Japanese language channels decide to carry Brasil games, then the popularity would increase.

    I think Globo has the rights to carry all the purely Brasilian games, except for the Eliminatorias of the World Cup...

    Yes, of course! :cool:

    It's only because of lack of media coverage.

    With the approaching of the 2014 WC I'm pretty sure transmissions to the entire world will get more & more widespread & will be a full global reality after the Cup (with a Brazil win or not).;).

    my information is that we (TV Globo) are transmitting games and FootBrazil (our weekly magazine show) to Holland. i don't know which channel but i'll try to find out.

    for those of you following this thread, our games (the ones we broadcast in English) are going out to 160 countries - not quite world domination but we're getting there haha

    Thanks for that mate, appreciate it.

    I've been thinking about getting Sport1 for a while now, and since I'm actually moving to another place I'll consider getting it. Never seen anything listed when it comes to the Brazilian League though, and a search for FootBrazil on their site came up with nothing, searching TV Globo there came up with a couple of F1 results ( Barrichello ).

    Since Sport1 has a nice offer going atm ( €5 a month for 3 months ) I'll probably going to check it out.

    Again, thanks for the info.

    Here's the answer:

    20 February 2009
    Globo TV Sports, the Brazilian media rights distributor, has signed a deal with Gol TV that will see Brazilian domestic soccer shown in North America on the bilingual channel for the next three years.

    The channel, which was founded by former Uruguay international and 1984 South American Footballer of the Year, Enzo Francescoli in 2003, screens more than 8000 hours of soccer action every year, and more live soccer matches than any other North American network.

    The distributor has concluded similar deals in Spain, Greece, Holland, France and South Africa.

    "These contracts are extremely important for the sporting world, mainly for Brazilian football, that's internationally recognised for the high technical and competitive level of the teams. In addition, fans from around the world will have the opportunity to follow along and support the Brazilian teams," said Marcelo Spinola, director of Globo TV Sports.

    As well as live games, GolTV will show the popular programmes 'Brazilian Magic Football' and 'Footbrazil' in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

    Digital+Futbol will be responsible for the Spanish rights, while Novasport will show the programmes in Greece. SuperSport, the company which shows the Uefa Champions League and English Premier League in South Africa will add the Brazilian rights to its portfolio.

    Contract summary
    Length of contract: 3 years
    Annualised value: US$5.5 million
    Overall value: US$16.5 million

    the only problem is that there is no coordination between the channels. Globo, for instance, may show Corinthians but then at the same time, so is GolTV, when maybe another match could have been shown. I'm wondering how much more intimate the details of the television deals are.

    They only show games from Sao Paulo. It should be called FootSaoPaulo and not FootBrazil.

    I see games from Rio, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, etc. However from Jan. to April (state championships) they only show the paulista tournament.

    The Brazilian league, to an outsider, is CONFUSING. Is there one league, or many? When does it start and end? Show me a table of standings and maybe I'll start to get it. And like many people, I have a short attention span, so if I don't get it after a few seconds I will lose interest again. ;)

    It's not THAT confusing. Quite similar to the european agenda:
    Brasileirão --> EPL/Serie A/La Liga
    Copa do Brasil ---> FA cup/Coppa Italia/Copa del Rey
    Sulamericana ---> Europa League
    Libertadores ----> Champions League

    The main difference is that in the beginning of the year we have the state tournaments, the most famous are in São Paulo (Paulistão), Rio de Janeiro (Carioca), Rio Grande do Sul (Gaúcho), Minas Gerais (Mineiro), and others, together with the Libertadores/Copa Do Brasil.

    The Campeonato Brasileiro (Brasileirão) starts in May and ends in December, so teams participating in the Libertadores or Copa do Brasil will be quite busy in the first rounds, while teams that participate in the Sulamericana will get busier a bit later.

    atm the state tourneys, Libertadores and Copa do Brasil are done, and the Brasileirão+ Copa Sulamericana are running.

    I think the one thing that really confuses foreigners is the state championship system. People new to Brazilian football find it difficult to comprehend that (because Brazil is so big) it has only had a National Championship since 1971.

    Foreigners get very confused about the historical importance of the state championship and legacy. We'll read about Santos, for example, this year and the Neymar/Ganso selecao debate and wonder why Santos is playing competitively before the National League starts up! Or we'll read about a historic Garrincha/Botafogo-Flamengo game and not have the proper historical context, etc. But hey, I don't understand the early rounds of the FA Cup, either. What is a First round proper? Fourth Qualifying Round?:p Every country has its quirks.

    Sure, courtesy of LANCE!

    http://www.lancenet.com.br/tabela_brasileiro2010/

    P= Points
    J= Number of games played
    V= Wins
    E= Draws
    D= Losses
    GP = Goals scored
    GC= Goals conceded
    SG= GP - GC

    About the state championships, it's not that strange because most of the Brazilian states have the size and population of whole countries. Rivalries are big between clubs of the same state , and usually you have around 2~4 top level clubs in each of those state championships I mentioned, plus a big part of the smaller clubs manage to put a good fight against them, there is always a surprise team in those tourneys.

    My problem with all this topic is simple - example:
    Yesterday I watched some "UEFA Confederations Cup" games- AC Milan, AJ Aux, Real Madrid, etc... these games were damn boring, almost put me to sleep!!!

    Then, later, I watched Vasco beat Santos... how exciting that was! Wonderful play, speed, enthusiasm in the field.

    So- in my opinion, any Brazilian game in any league, local or national, is much, much better than anything from Europe.

    Why the hell do we have to explain anything to the gringos? If they don't understand, that is their problem. Forget about it!

    I totally agree. With the internet, you can find all the information you need; I'm shocked that us Gringos are so dumb and can't locate the Brazilian league on our own. You would think that Brazil, being the most popular team in the world would inspire more people to try understand the league, but I guess not. How can you understand football without understanding Brazil??

    That being said, efforts still have to be made to help foreigners know the world's most exciting football comes from Brazil. I suppose that's what marketing is for.

    maybe the reason so many gringos (hey people, remember that in Brazil a gringo is ANY foreigner, not necessarily an american) dont care about the brazilian league is that too many brazilians think like OldCariocainNY and bash them when they ask for info.
