BS. Watch any league game, or practise for that matter, and you'll see Marta do that without the trick edit. Actually live. Before your very eyes. And she passes the ball. Accurately across 60 metres. And she scores when opportunity knocks. FIFA World Player of the Year 2006. Accept American excellence when you see it, even if it happens to be South American.
Who's the Ronaldinho in women's soccer?? - Marta!! I had an opportunity to talk to several of Marta's teammates at Sofiemyr after Umeå's UEFA Cup semifinal victory over Kolbotn three months ago and both Hanna Ljungberg and Lise Klaveness couldn't say enough good things about playing with Marta and having the opportunity to watch some of the amazing things she can do with a soccer ball on a regular basis during training sessions.
Re: Who's the Ronaldinho in women's soccer?? - Marta!! Since the demise of the WUSA and the way international friendlies are not shown on tv, we middle class Americans have no way to see these players except in the Olympics and World Cup. I wish we could have better exposure to world soccer!
Re: Who's the Ronaldinho in women's soccer?? - Marta!! It is a little bit funny game to name "The (player X) of womens soccer": What about this: Marta = the Ronaldinho of womens soccer Mia Hamm = the Zinedine Zidane of womens soccer Birgit Prinz = the Jan Koller of womens soccer Malin Moström = the David Beckham of womens soccer Kicki Bengtsson = the Jaap Staam of womens soccer Or... ?
Here's a couple more suggestions: Michael Owen is the Hanna Ljungberg of men's soccer (brilliant, always injured). Stig Torsten is the Frida Östberg of men's soccer (solid, always scary). Ruud Van Nistelrooy is the Conny Pohlers of men's soccer (completely useless, except that they used to score a lot, which people admire for some reason).
The norwegian FXT.no website, owned by TV2 which has the broadcasting rights for norwegian soccer, just presented the Norwegian rookie Lene Mykjåland as the Ronaldino of women's soccer. In a related article, the same website recently presented Leni Larsen Kaurin as the Beckham of women's soccer, so their credibility can certainly be questioned.
Re: Who's the Ronaldinho in women's soccer?? - Marta!! I would describe Kristine Lilly's play as much more like Zidane's than Hamm's. And in any event, even if Marta is comparable to Ronaldinho, Ronaldinho still is not considered to be on the level of Pele or Maradona. In fact, given Ronaldinho's failure to get Brazil into the final in 2006 (something that his storied teammate, the great and fluid Rivaldo, NEVER failed to do), perhaps it can be said that Ronaldinho is not the equal of Rivaldo. And that brings me to another point. There is an obvious comparison between a women's superstar and men's players. Imagine a male player with the combined attributes of Rivaldo and Edgar Davids. You've just described Michelle Akers, the greatest women's player ever.
