Lets start a list of who supports a downtown stadium and who isn't on board, yet. I'll start with a short list: With us: County Executive Scott Walker Not buying it yet: Rocky Marcoux, development commissioner Michael Hunt, JS
That's true....if you're counting writers, you can throw Charles Gardner in on the pro-stadium side. BTW, your avatar reminded me that i'm going to see FM tonight at the Rave!!! peter
Did you survive the experience, Peter? Floggy Molly have been through Columbus several times since I moved here last summer, but I've always had a conflict that's kept me from attending one of their concerts. I bought their last CD a few months back and have only been able to listen to it in earnest recenty; another strong effort, albeit a bit more traditional (which they pull off very well, IMHO). You know, as much as I think the MLS All Star Game is a hellishly boring affair - nothing more than a marketing gimmick - if MLS wanted to make the event something worthwhile it would ditch its infatuation with having the latest flavor-of-the-month band perform at halftime and, instead, have FM play a set. Though in that instance I suppose we might need to find a way to get Budweiser to allow Guinness to become league sponsor for a day.
If we keep starting threads with half baked quotes, i will have no choice but to become a supremely hard core supporter of this here club. or was that jerry mcguire?
flogging molly is nothing compared to the opening band, the amazing, incomparable GOGOL BORDELLO! FM is below the Pogues and Black 47 in the pecking order of Irish folk punk but in the area of Ukrainian Jewish Gypsy folk punk, GOGOL BORDELLO IS KING!
am a big fan of Black 47....once went to Pittsburgh in February just to see them and will see them twice next weekend....alas, my FM tickets went unused last nite as i was given 2 Packers tickets at 4:30 pm for their 7 pm game in Green Bay. i gave my nephew the choice as we had already purchased the FM tix. (For the record, i have moshed to FM before). Liam chose the Packers game in the rain and we only missed the first minute in a half. tried to get back for the end of FM, but the show was over by the time we got back to the Rave at midnight Ben, let me know the next time Gogol Bordello plays... peter
A concert note: Tomorrow *Sat Aug 13) at Schubas (10PM) is the incomperable DASH RIP ROCK. New Orleans punk-a-billy at its best. 'Walk in, Crawl Out"
A fall-back position I am going to ask a question off the top of my head without too much thought so cut me some slack you guys... What about the Summerfest Grounds for a stadium location as a fall-back position should the current proposal get torpedoed? You put a SSS up on the Summerfest grounds. For 2 weeks you cough up the dates to Summerfest. Other than that, you take advantage of their infrastructure, like parking, concessions etc. The SSS could become the new main stage and the current arena would be the secondary stage. The selling point to Milwaukee is that a partnership with soccer would allow Summerfest an avenue to grow. The SSS would allow more tickets to be sold, more revenue to be generated, and bigger names to play in the SSS during Summerfest, while some nearly-big-names could play what is the current main stage; and there would be less cost in terms of land acquisition or supporting facilities being constructed. The ethnic festivals throughtout the summer could tie in nicely with soccer games. Ie, Irish Fest could culminate with a soccer game honoring the local Irish community. Invite a couple of Irish teams to play a double header with MLS. I realize there are plenty of flaws in this off-the-cuff idea, but just a thought should the current proposal reach the same fate as Krause's proposal did a couple of years ago.
i agree. unfortunately i allowed it to be my nephew's decision not mine...and unfortunately again, i think there's something else going on in Chicago tonight about the same time as FM at the Vic.... peter
Ah, but one can still go to the Fire game and still make the Dash Rip Rock show at Schubas. Thats my plan.
Well, the President of Ireland, Ms. Mary McAleese will be in town this weekend for some festivities. T'would be a wonderful thing if a reporter asked her in the presence of the mayor, "Madam President, wouldn't it be ever so much fun if this fine berg built a soccer stadium, the likes of which could hold Robbie and the boys for a friendly against the lads from the US of A. And Madam President, could we not have even a bit more fun with a bit of a Hurling exhibition in said stadium, after all we've a team or two who would give your boys from Cork a run." Sprintjeloy, you're a reporter get a pass and get in there.
I can see it already: Hoards of disgruntled BigSoccer-ites attacking the idea that a SSS would host a MLH (Major League Hurling) franchise.
