Since I'm pretty much still a newbie to the rich history, folklore and tradition of the Gunners, with the ONLY way I've ever gotten to watch matches from Ol' Highbury back in the day, was either on YouTube or on my multi-region/multi-format DVD player for my PAL-format Arsenal discs, who in your opinion has been the better keeper for us over the past 15 years? Wojciech Szczesny, Jens Lehmann, or David Seaman?
I would say Seaman as well. I still have a soft spot for crazy Jens though. The dude was a maniac ( and a great keeper too).
I believe Seaman as well. Although one cant argue how entertaining it was to watch Lehman minus 2006.
When i started watching regularly, Seaman was already on the tail end of his career. While Seaman was probably the better keeper when playing with the famous back four, Lehmann is my personal favorite.
transfermarkt.com has the following stats on penalty saves: Seaman 3/37 (8.11%) (It seems likely that his stats are incomplete). Lehmann 34/101 (33.66%) Almunia 17/53 (32.08%) Fabianski 7/24 (29.17%) Szczesny 10/35 (28.57%) Excluding Seaman, these are all comparable, so Almunia seems as good a choice as any. I'd take Lehmann, though, since 1 of his saves won us the FA Cup and another sent us to the Champions League Final.
I'd take Lehman too since he kept a scouting report on PK tendencies on a card tucked in his sock. No way was anyone comfortable going up against that nutter in any 1v1 situation.
He that giveth taketh away. Still my favorite though. My old roomate in college was german (and a chelsea supporter ) and we used to get soooo many laughs from him.
Actually, Wojciech Szczesny should not be mentioned in the same sentence with Seaman or Lehman. Granted much younger, he is nowhere close to these 2 guys. He is a work in progress so far.
