I think France played quite badly and Argentina never got going . However France was a surprise as to how they conceded goals.

Seriously though... it's without a doubt France. They not only went out in the first round but they went out without even scoring a single goal! :D
When you consider the fact that they were both the world and euro champions - and they were supposed to be an even better team than in 98, that was one of the most unprecedented flops of the century. Argentina were in a very difficult group and did pick up 4 points at least. Italy were very unlucky with refereeing decisions. England should not even be on that poll. I'd put Portugal instead.

Argentina, because they were the favorites for most.

Argentina, by far. France were hampered by Zidane's injury and the absence of Pires, one of the best players in the world at the time. Argentina brought their first choice lineup and still managed to stall in the group stage.

True, but just like that, I bet if Brazil gets the group of death in 2006 and for some reason they end up third, they will probably take the honors in this thread.

France without doubt, were the World and European champions going into the world cup, not only did they not win but they didn't even score!

Argentina would be 2nd in the 2002 choking department

It's gotta be France. Injuries or not, they were the "best" team in the world and they didn't advance.

Not only did they not qualify they finished last in the group. Argentina at least got third. France was beaten by Denmark and Uruguay, Argentina only by England. France tied against Senegal, Argentina against Sweden and beat Nigeria. France scored a big fat zero goals and conceded three, Argentina scored two and conceded two. Before the WC pretty much everyone spoke about those two and Brazil as the three big favorites to win it. I really can’t se how any team but France could be the biggest choker in 2002. Argentina is a clear no. 2 for that WC but do not really challenges France for that title, since they atleast got some results even if they failed to qualify.
