Yes but the conditions have to be right to survive first, if the stakes are high would I really want to pump in my money and move out
Lets establish that no one in here or anywhere else knows if they are going to do good or bad
would you as the owner stay within LA and play it safe with an already established fan base, rivalry etc.
    or
would you go to an untapped and MLS wise unknown market
thats what it really comes down to, not to mention you only have one shot like the article said

Well, there is the risk that the overall value of the team will fall the minute they move out of LA too. All things being equal, a professional team is more valuable in LA than it is in San Diego, or even in Orange County. Now, whether they can get a favorable stadium deal up in LA or OC remains to be seen.

I know this has been said before, but San Diego has nothing close to an interim stadium (while the new one is being built). USD is too small, The Q is too big. Petco would be cool, but it's too big and people would quickly grow tired of the bad sightlines. Perhaps if Boca, Flash, Soccers, SDSU, etc. could all band together to build a 15K-20K stadium, San Diego could lure a team. Until then I just don't see how this could happen.

May happen sooner than you think once the Chargers move up to LA. Because they won't be getting a new stadium down in San Diego any time soon it seems.

I would be fine with that arrangement. I was a Charger season ticket holder for a few years, but the game experience didn't justify the the ticket price IMO.

that whole limited fan base who are mexican or support chivas de guadalajara in FMF is something worth noting...
that would affect attendance revenue in a undesirable way

however on the bright side they want to become a more homegrown talent club which would have been great for SD

We'll see what happens. They're forcused on LA County for the moment but they've moved their sights around several times already. And we know they've considered San Diego in the past.

Biggest problem I see for them going forward however is they seem committed to the Chivas USA name. Which unfortunately will always handicap them as it largely eliminates all but Mexican fans who like Chivas and a few other random people from rooting for them. They'll never maximize their potential with that name.

Agreed. If/when a new stadium is built, why not rebrand? It's not like they'd be the first in the league to do so. With a new stadium in LA County, I'm sure they could get the Aztecs name somehow...
Then again, they are dumping lots of money into advertising the Chivas USA brand now, so it's hard to imagine that they'll look at a change as anything other than a waste of money. This group has repeatedly shown that they are short-sighted (7 coaches in 7 years?!) and narrow minded. Why should we expect them to be any different in terms of marketing?

What you don't think they're "equality" night is going to be a hit with fans yelling "puto" every few minutes?

They will never change their name unless maybe a huge group of fans or potential fans gets their attention, and say they want it changed and why. Even then, maybe not.

That's fine. Then they'll remain a second rate team always wondering why they can't seem to draw that many fans in. If that's they way they're going to operate I'd rather SD get their own team with owners not so dedicated to a proven bad idea.

If they moved to San Diego, as much as I hate to say it, I don't care if they're called San Diego Chivas...at last it's not Chivas USA. It would be better if they rebranded, but if they're set with the whole Chivas gimmick, then SD in the name would be my preference.

Well, it could be a really inclusive moment when the whole crowd chants "culero" as the refs take the field.

LOL. It would at that. Frankly I don't mind "culero" particularly in respect to when it's often used (when the refs e'ff up, when players dive, etc...). "Puto" however is just wrong no matter how you slice it. It's a slur and shouldn't be tolerated.

How about San Diego gets it's own MLS team and Chivas can be in Chula Vista, since Chula Vista wanted the Chargers to be "Chula Vista Chagers," they can be fine with "Chivas Chula Vista."

We can call 'em the "Chichus."

I'd rather Boca or Flash step up to be the SD MLS team.

Hi. Very sorry about off topic question. On vacation with family in San Diego and need to find a way to watch Chivas-RBNY on Saturday night. Hotel doesn't have Galavision. Any suggestions? We are staying by the Marina. I can't imagine there there will be any gatherings for this one, but perhaps just a place that would be willing to have the game on one of the TV's for us. Thanks

Well Ukraine, I live in North County and up here I get looks for asking for a soccer game at a sports bar, I tried one in Del Mar a few weeks back advertised that they have every sports channel and when I asked for the sounders game I was told they don't have the soccer channel.

Giving you a bump, but you should start your own thread there are probably San Diegans here who know of a bar that plays soccer games, but they're detracted from a thread title about mysterious investors.

Lith your Sockers' pride is making them grow on me. Definitely would choose Sockers for MLS over getting Chivas here.

Ukraine -- the two issues you are going to have are the fact that the game is being played on Saturday night and the fact that you are traveling with family -- which I assume means children. Most of the places here will be moving toward a focus on drinking/partying and away from a "have breakfast/lunch and watch a game" focus.

Still, there are lots of places in the downtown/gaslamp area that have multiple TVs and would potentially be able to show the game. It may be easier to check on Yelp to see which ones are most convenient to your hotel. In know there's a Red Zone sports bar/restaurant downtown and also a Tilted Kilt. It's anybody's guess if they would be willing to bump an MLB game (Padres are in town) for the game you want. The Princess Pub in Little Italy would be more soccer friendly, as would the Shakespeare a little farther north in Middletown -- which is generally a good place to watch a game. Your best bet is to call ahead and make sure they'll make at least one tv available for you.

Haha, nice. I'm just surprised that I'm in the minority. They won 11 championships and while at the Sports Arena back in the day they'd sell out most of their games. But as athletics68 has pointed out before they're already an indoor team that has no desire whatsoever in joining MLS.

You can try going to the East Village Tavern & Bowl in downtown/East Village. It's a pretty big sports bar that has plenty of TV's and a laid back atmosphere and they usually always play soccer games if they're on and know about them. Check out their site to see if you might like it.
