North Carolina loses Danny Garcia, last year's ACC freshman of the year and a consensus freshman All America, as he signs a homegrown contact with FC Dallas. http://www.soccerbyives.net/2013/06/dallas-midfielder-garcia.html Garcia, who most of you probably know is on the US U20 WC roster, was likely not returning to UNC. He had showed well with the 20s and earlier this year trained with Club America and Dallas probably made him a good offer to get him to sign before he put his talents on display at the WC, where he could have gotten even more offers. Good for Garcia, but a blow to UNC.
It is too late to leave early. Garcia turning pro has been talked about so much that I forgot about it and just assumed it had already happened. Would you bet that Danny Garcia has USMNT call-up some day?
Watching Johnson play tonight, his signing is a real head-shaker. Deshorn Brown, on the other hand, is doing pretty well, and both of them signed for a similar amount of money. Here's the full payscale for this year's GA's. For now, I believe their salaries are all cap-exempt, but once that ends, some of them will become a fairly significant cap hit. I wonder if that's part of why Lopez slid to the 14th pick. Andrew Farrell $160K Walker Zimmerman $155K Mikey Lopez $145K Deshorn Brown $115K Jason Johnson $111K Eriq Zavaleta $95K Kekuta Manneh $85K
Add Wake Forest's Collin Martin, who is now one-and-done. Steven Goff @SoccerInsider1h D.C. United youth movement continues: Wake Forest MF Collin Martin signs homegrown contract, college coach confirms #dcu #mls
So I completely missed this when it happened and only stumbled upon it when I was looking for some info on Chris Klute on the Atlanta Silverbacks website, but apparently in May the Silverbacks signed Clemson GK Cody Mizell, who had a year of eligibility remaining. He had been a three-year starter for the Tigers. http://www.orangeandwhite.com/news/2013/may/21/clemson-goalkeeper-cody-mizell-signs-atlanta-silve/ It's a strange move. I mean, a four-year starter from an ACC school (especially one who was at Bradenton like Mizell had been) was likely gonna get a long look from MLS after his senior year. Going the NASL route makes sense... if you're gonna player. But Mizell appears to be the third string GK for the Silverbacks and didn't play in the first half of the season. Curious. BTW, as I type this, I'm watching Daniel Haber playing for Canada against Mexico in the Gold Cup. I think it's fair to say he wouldn't be playing in that tournament if he were returning to Cornell this season.
I would think signing a contract with a professional team would foreclose Haber from returning to Cornell. The article states he is "forgoing" his final year of eligibility (I might overlook the misspelling if this weren't the Ivy League). He is not listed on the Maccabi Haifa roster, but he was a few months ago. http://cornellbigred.com/news/2013/1/8/MSOC_0108130203.aspx

I saw that Mizell earlier in the year, when I was preparing for the seniors. Where the hell did he go, moment? Dumb move, kid. Maybe he had to move? Thanks for the Dan Haber - I was looking at him; I knew that I heard that name from somewhere!!!
It's tempting to speculate about whether John Murphy's departure from Clemson last summer had anything to do with Mizell's own exit. He was obviously a profile GK coach and had been fairly successful with Mizell as his starter. I actually think it's a pretty sensible move for Mizell to sign with his hometown team. Good place to try to break in as a pro.
Another one-and-done. UCSB's Ema Boateng, who was one of the top freshmen last year, has signed a 3.5 year deal with Helsingborg in Sweden. http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search?q=ema+boateng++sweden+HIF&newwindow=1&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=sv&u=http://hif.se//Article.aspx?id=ee9ed192-efa1-4a3d-863e-141ff7522b49&usg=ALkJrhjHDj835G8FrjM-0xfAo_Uc-Iub5Q Must have been a good offer. I had Boateng penciled in as the top pick in next year's SuperDraft. Shame MLS lost him.
Here's an updated list of players that have left early this year. Please add any I may have missed Bradlee Baladez, Jr. F, South Carolina (Dallas - HG) Ema Boateng, Fr. Overheard from Coulson, HOLY SHITE, this isn't the same Michigan that I visited in the summer at the lake house! It's freaking cold. I'm out of here, mate. The statement above is a fabrication....
