Vow, either English fans have short memories or just plain lairs. Just go and check all the old threads BEFORE EVERY WORLD CUP!

No mate, Media just tell you exactly what you want to hear. England are always one of the World cup favorites among the bookies in England, and guess why? Hint its not the media.

Here is typical phase England fans go through
Phase 1 Qualifying after their latest Tournament, doom and gloom, and a promise not to fall into hype.
Phase 2 Near the end of qualifiers, If not yet qualified Team castigated as being Rubbish.
Phase 3: Right After the qualifiers Cautious optimism.

Phase 4: A steady built up of the team, start finding other teams to be Rubbish "We can beat them, they are overrated"

Phase 5: End of the CL or PL! England players are all world class, and based on few champions League 99.9% of players that don't play in PL are overrated.
Phase 6 groups are announced (couple or month before the Tournament EC or WC) England fans are thoroughly convinced their starting 11 second to none. Should beat two of the 3 teams in their group easily

Phase 7 Hype goes into over drive! The media in England and yes FANS on these forums (Ones like you who are now denying it), can't see any team bar the flavor of the month (Spain this year), that could be better than England. England are now firm second or third favorite. "Smaller teams" are lucky if they don't lose by more than 2.

    First post, woo hoo!

I'm rooting for England but the USA have a much easier path to the semis. Ghana and then either Uruguay or South Korea. There's a good chance the USA could get all the way to the semis, but then they will play Brazil and most likely be knocked out.

England on the other hand have to play Germany and then Argentina to get to the semis. Then to get into the final, England will most likely have to beat Spain. Then it would be a Brazil vs England final.

So for England to win we have to beat Germany, then Argentina, then Spain, and then Brazil, in all likelihood. Seems pretty hopeless, and I don't think it's going to happen, but you never know. I'm glad it worked out this way though, if England advance at least to the semis there will be some pretty awesome matches against great teams, which is good enough for me, even if England don't win.

The English are always favourites with the English bookies, as the English obviously back England, that's the way bookmakers work, the more money is bet, the shorter the odds become, hence we become favourites, it's a fairly simple concept.

I think the English are probably better placed to say what the English think.

I'd take that. Bet most England fans would as well, if not publicly.

    They're germans nevertheless.

If I recall correctly, UK naturalized alot of athletes before the Olympics. An odd number, I might add.

I would have liked to see them both paired again, since their duel in the group phase left a sensation that they needed to define who was above who. Unfortunately the WC doesn`t function this way, and the only possibility to see them matched together is for third or first place, where imho, none has a chance to reach it. Then who passes this round ?, both unfortunately also have uncertain matches. I think Germany is way on top of England, but there is a long tradition on them and in this case history weighs big, so their outcome turns uncertain. In the case of USA v/s Ghana, happens the same case but at the other side of the coin, no history among them, in styles absolutely diferent one from the other. More determinating is the next phase, if both manage to beat their opponents, in which case both are going to loose (Imho), maybe with a slightly higher possibility for the USA than England.

No, I can`t predict who goes further.:(

This is getting really tired, old hat, and more than a little borderline bigoted.

Essentially all the German players have German blood except for Cacau and the Bosnian. Ozil is something like 4th generation-- great grand parents were living in Germany.

Well, you know that due to our youth policy and training over the last decade or so, we will win the WC either this year or in 2014. Fact.

It's your imagination. England fans never think they will win the world cup.

Then you don't understand TalkSport. They deliberately go to one extreme or another in order to provoke a response. People phoning in = people listening = money.

Well, England can't do any worse than the USA now unless you look at GD.

Why isn't there a poll at the start of this thread? There should be.
