Hey y'all. I live in the DC area but I like watching New York Red Bulls and DC United. Do you think it's possible to support both teams or should I pick one? Which team do you think has better fans and is the better team? Thanks
Hello! I don't think there's any team anyone "should" support. Meaning, you support whatever team you want to support and it doesn't matter whether it's one team or two teams. And about that fan question, who has the better, I can't really answer cause Im not really into American football. But yeah, of course it's possible to support two teams.
D.C. United has the higher on-the-pitch pedigree; even though things have been less than stellar lately, their record still stands as the most successful team in Major League Soccer (with ten domestic and two international trophies to their name). Stadium-wise, they are in a bit of a pickle; of any MLS team in either the USA or Canada, their long-term situation is, unfortunately, the most precarious. The Red Bulls didn't have a lot of success when they were still the MetroStars; since Red Bull came in, they've managed to set up a fine soccer-specific stadium, and put more money into building up a competitive side. They are still chasing a major title, but with the kind of strides the team has been making, it's probably only a matter of time. The choice is yours to make, but I'd probably recommend reading up more on each team, talking to some of their supporters, or even checking out a few more games for each side, before going with whichever option ends up being the best for you.
if you're in the dc area it shouldn't really be a question should it? go to a game at rfk, crappy stadium though it is, and i bet you will have made your decision. there's nothing like seeing your team live. i may be biased as a dc fan myself.
Hi guys, thank you for your responses. Yes, I've been to a few games at RFK stadium before. Last year DC had a pretty poor season so I was tuning in more and more to the Red Bulls games, especially after they signed Thierry Henry. I think they have an exciting team to watch, with lots of good attacking players. DC's made some pretty good moves this offeason though, I was a fan of Josh Wolff about five or eight years ago and of course Charlie Davies is a great story. I'll probably continue to watch both teams until I make my final decision...
Try supporting a priemier league Like CHELSEA OR LIVERPOOL OR A TEAM THATS GOOD TO WATCH LIKE CHELSEA NICCE PASSING
Don't make your decision based on how they're doing at the moment, or worse, what players they got now. Unless you're not above changing teams every couple years (but then that's not normally the behavior one would associate with being a "fan"). Instead make your decision based on a long-range prognosis of how strong financially you think they'll be in 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, etc. Because...you don't want to choose somebody and then find out they suck in a couple years, and wind up with buyer's remorse. But then they could suck in a couple years yet still have a long-range viability, so just wait a couple years more and they can be good again. Or, make your decision based on some obscure profundity or serendipidous moment from your life, which is what I'm prone to do sometimes. It's not a great way of picking teams, but it makes the process personal. Also, what kind of personality do you have? Are you the kind who likes what everybody else likes, or do you like to go against the grain? Would you like to associate with a blue collar fan base, or a fan base of tea-sippers? Are you a fascist, a communist or something in between? Do you like the color red, or the color blue, because those are the only two choices you have. And then, very important-- do you like the city that the team represents? Even if you never plan on living there. Do you know anything about the city? Could you live there if you had to? Because the club represents the city or the community that they're in, not just their fans abroad. Then lastly, avoid any sports club owned by MLSE or the government of North Korea. I don't know which is worse, but at least you're safe avoiding both.
What is the meaning of having "better fans"? Also why would "better team" influence who you choose to support? Let's say you choose Red Bulls because they're better this year, are you gonna switch next year when they're crap and DC are better? Choosing a team to support is not a science, nor is it like choosing the best food at your local market. Let your feelings lead you to the team you will eventually support, stop trying to force it. It will come naturally. Meanwhile, just enjoy the league as a whole.
I think it's fine to support rival teams as long as you don't live in the city of one of those teams. It's ok to support the Vancouver Whitecaps when you live in New York but it's not ok to support Philadelphia Union when living in New York.
If you are from DC, I think cheering for them would make sense. You can actually go see them play, possibly meet some players at events, and many other things. It's a great opportunity. The forms of all MLS teams are like roller coasters, so don't be down if they aren't great at the moment. Really though, just cheer for the team your heart tells you to. If for some reason, you would rather follow NY from a distance, do it. It's really your decision.
watch the soccer matchs when you think this is a cool team you keep the team in you mind next time they play they might loose dosnt matter they still might be a great soccer club/ football club.
Why can't it be easy like in Italy, where you can just decide where you are on the Communism-to-Fascism scale and support the appropriate club?
Well guys I think I made my final decision, last night was the clincher for me. That was simply a masterclass by New York Red Bulls. I will continue to support DC United as my second team though I'm not above it but I'm not in any rush to be labeled a bandwagon fan either. I will always support the US national team no matter what but I'm more flexible when it comes to club level. Long term prognosis for Red Bulls: Good. Long term prognosis for DC United: Err...not so much. No stadium, no owner with deep pockets, roster in transition etc. I would say I'm more of a socialist/communist, I live in DC and I'm a big fan of Barack Obama. I would have to say red > blue. I've thought about this for a long time and that's the only conclusion I can come up with. But I thought DC played in black The city is alright, I have no strong ties to it, I just live here. I don't really think New York or Jersey is a better place to live or the people are that much more pleasant. Location doesn't have a huge bearing on which team I choose to root for.
That's a good question but probably not. Red Bulls have all the pieces together to contend for titles in the next 5 years, DC will probably just be happy to make the playoffs... I think that it is possible but that it is highly unusual I would say I'm about an 8 on the communist scale, which Italian team should I support?
I don't have a problem with you deciding to be a fan of Red Bull while living in DC, but I do have an issue with you having both teams in your "top two" NY-DC is the biggest rivalry in MLS, its like supporting Duke and UNC as your number 2, or supporting Yankees with Red Sox number two. You cannot support NY and then support NE, Philly, or DC second. It's like sh#tting where you eat...or something like that.
This doesn't make sense... so all my buddies that took jobs in New York need to stop rooting for the teams in Philly that they grew up with?
Obviously, if you're from that city, it's one thing. The point is someone that just randomly decided to be a fan out of thin air (like many American fans now as soccer is continuing to grow as a spectator sport) can't support the rival AND their team. If someone wants to be a fan of the rival and HATE the team located in their city, that's fine too. The point is that no matter what sport you follow, you aren't a fan if you root for your team and its rival. You can't like the Yankees and Red Sox.
How the hell can you ask that question ? Supporting a club is something you feel.. It's not like going to a supermarket and buying a team, gosh man.. Your a doble jersey guy
I get you now. I would go as far as saying rooting for two teams in the same league is the biggest wuss bet of all time. Regardless of how good they are, it just doesn't make sense to have the old "I'm rooting for a good game" when they play each other. I'm sure there are good exceptions but honestly most people doing that shit are just hedging their bets that one will have a good season every year.
I don't get it. Why would someone want to be told what team to support. And what about people who change teams more often than their undeeze. Shakes head. http://www.sportsfansconnected.com
