A lot of MLS fans believe that the Carolinas would be a great place for MLS expansion, but fans of that persuasion disagree on which current Carolina NASL/USL team would be the best candidate for promotion for the big leagues. So that's the subject of this poll. Brief description of each team: Carolina RailHawks (NASL) Number of Facebook fans: 3,825 Supporters club: Triangle Soccer Fanatics Stadium: Wake-Med Soccer Park (10,000) Average Attendance over last 4 seasons: 3,102 Charleston Battery (USL Pro) Number of Facebook fans: 6,000 Supporters club: The Regiment Stadium: Blackbaud Stadium (5,113) Average Attendance over last 4 seasons: 3,684 Charlotte Eagles (USL Pro) Number of Facebook fans: 2,211 Supporters club: Orange Crusade Stadium: Charlotte Christian School Stadium (5,000) Average Attendance over last 4 seasons: 911 Wilmington Hammerheads (USL Pro) Number of Facebook fans: 1,437 Supporters club: Port City Firm Stadium: Legion Stadium (6,000) Average Attendance over last 4 seasons: N/A
Charleston is way too small to support an MLS franchise, same with wilmington. the rail hawks have the best stadium situation and a fast growing market. What if they have a team called the Carolina __________ and they play games split between Charlotte, the Tri, and Charleston with most in charlotte and the triangle.
Carolina Wanderers? Like you said, the Railhawks have the best stadium situation, and they play in the best location for future growth.
I'd go for Raleigh. Charlotte already has NFL and NBA . And Raleigh seems to fit the demographics MLS wants.
I lean toward this answer (then again, I am a bit biased...) but could see Charlotte working out quite nicely. There's no other plausible major-league market in the Carolinas besides those two. Charleston and Wilmington are way too small.
I have to throw out another option in the Triad. There are no major pro teams, 2 major cities, and the possibility of drawing the hardcore from the Triangle and Charlotte. Selfishly, I want the Triangle.
I wouldn't call those cities major, but the CSA is almost as big as for Raleigh, the TV market is nearly half the size, and they'd be reasonably centrally located for a potential regional team. I still think either Raleigh or Charlotte would do better, but it's not as implausible a choice for a major-league venue as Wilmington or Charleston would be.
Railhawks would be incredible. We've got passion, and the Triangle is a fast growing hotbed. Charlotte isn't a bad spot but there's not the passion about it there is here.
There's like a whole discussion thread about this, here: Carolinas Anyways, my best best is also with the Triangle. There's no way another metropolitan area (except Charlotte, but too little interest) in the Carolinas could meet the MLS demands for a team. Like the MLS always does, when they start to gauge interest from NC/SC I think they will make a b-line for RDU simply because of the experience this community has for supporting soccer.
Wow.. that's actually a really cool idea, almost fitting for the region. I would go for the main "home" stadium being in Raleigh, with a couple in Charleston and one in Charlotte each year. Hmm.. really neat. Problem would be, making sure each venue has facilities up to snuff, and the added expenses of travel.
The group that owns the Charlotte pro lacrosse team is buying the Eagles and says they want to move up to MLS by 2020. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/20...group-taking-over-charlotte.html#.UtqZ04so7C1
Well when Hounds take over next year they might have the inside track on banter and innuendo for going to MLS. However it remains to if they can actually do it.
Correction, they're buying the Eagles USL Pro spot, not the Eagles. The Eagles are self relegating to USL PDL to continue their ministry at a level more conducive to their financial situation. They will still exist however and will continue their Christianity through soccer thing.
Of course he is. Every Tom, Dick and Dingus these days is contemplating an MLS bid. Lets see how he manages at the USL level first. So far his lacrosse team hasn't exactly been printing money.
Every MLS club had to start somewhere. I hope this gains traction because a revamped Memorial Stadium would be awesome. Take a look at the view:
This is great news for Charlotte soccer fans... there will finally be a mainstream team to support. Taking that next step to MLS is going to be gigantic, but at least Charlotte will have a higher profile soccer team in USL Pro.
Notice the super-narrow field. Hope they plan on removing 10 rows of seating all the way around if they're serious about playing soccer there long-term.
