We'll know when it happens though. A simple loss to Seattle won't be one of those even if we are without Henry and Olave. But if something ridiculous were to happen then maybe.
For those who have followed the team longer than I have, where does last year's playoff meltdown in the second leg against DC rank in the history of team meltdowns?
It wasn't as important as a playoff game, but on April 26, 2009 we hosted D.C. We were up 2-1. Then we allowed goals in the 90th minute and 90+2nd minute to lose 3-2.
Oh dear god I remember that. That totally set the tone for the rest of 2009 The loss to SJ was pretty bad too. But I would have to put the loss to W-Connection right up there with the season where they needed one point in their last three to make the playoffs and got exactly zero of them as far as meltdowns go.
It's hard to rank playoff meltdowns for this team. But it's up there. The San Jose series, the DC series in 2012, and getting knocked out by LA in 2001 were all so heartbreaking. All three series had moments of hope were we looked so good. We won at SJ, destroyed LA at home 4-1, and then we had the Cooper pk. And we came out on the losing end of all three. The biggest single game playoff meltdown was probably at New England in 2005, which would become the last time this team played as the Metrostars. We won at home and then scored a second half goal in New England and were up 2-0. Then probably the worst stretch of soccer in this teams history followed by conceding three goals in such a short time period. We weren't particularly good that year and looking back on it that late stretch of the season was were Alexi Lalas made horrible decision after horrible decision that set the tone for the Red Bull incompetence to follow. Then we have the horrible offside call against Adolfo Valencia against Chicago in 2000 and the horrible non call on Earnie Stewart in 2004 against DC. So whatever disaster scenario you can come up with, this team has probably been through it already.
I believe the "That's so Metro " moment happened when Petke took charge of the French Fraud and put himin his place. Instead of us floundering, we thrived after that. That is what so different about this team. We are positive now on "That's so Metro", not a negative anymore. We are on our way!!
Pissing a trophy away in epic fashion would be a scenario I don't think we've had yet...and it will probably happen. What I mean is being in a final (any final) such as... Being in an Open Cup final, being in the lead for the Supporters Shield on the last day of the season, or being in the MLS Cup final... Being up like 3 goals with 10 minutes left in the game... And then losing the hardware that was literally...LITEERALLY in your hands. Not having it taken from you...but just handing it away to someone else. A meltdown of epic proportions like the would probably kill me.
If Agudelo scores the goal that takes points away from us this weekend and destroys our hopes at the Supporters' Shield...that will be so metro. Also, in terms of the supporters shield...say we win all 3 of our remaining games...but because Seattle has games in hand they win the supporters shield...would that be considered "so metro"?
Mike Petke gave us one of those classic Metro moments when he got sent off for kissing the ball and handing it back to Michael Kennedy after the latter had called a PK.
So if we win our last 3 and Seattle still takes the shield then the metro moment would have been...away to Chivas? I mean we already had one metro moment this season when the bus driver couldn't get us to the Open Cup game on time then we trotted out a B team and lost. I mean...COME ON. That $hit happens in High School. NOT in the pros.
Well I think we can close this thread until the playoffs (God willing). Getting f#cked out of 3 points by the ref and then GIFTING the Revs 3 points. Supporters Shield dreams just went down the drain in hilariously horrific fashion. THAT. IS. SO. F#CKING. METRO. Edit: Tim Cahill puts us in the playoffs! ...supporters shield still gone though.
Well if we wind up losing the first round playoff series to Houston we'll know exactly when that moment was---Robles looking on in despair as the rebound on a save he just made goes in to tie the first leg 2-2.
Lets totally forget about the reckless challenge from Olave that sent us a man down with a comfortable lead...
That was pretty bad, but the reason why I didn't vote for it was because it's possible for a team to survive being a man down if they batten down the defensive hatches. However when that tying goal went in , i felt as if a wave of cold water had suddenly drenched me from head to foot. Hopefully the team rebounds tonight.
That Moment: "Goal: 104' HOU Omar Cummings" https://golazo.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2013-11-06-new-york-red-bulls-vs-houston-dynamo
No it wasn't. And Hall redeemed himself with some great reaction saves to keep Houston in it. I'm with Doc Worm on this
Sorry to hear about last night's result. Was rooting for Metro to win it all this year. Be proud of winning the Shield, and forget about the curse - it's over. Look at the Red Sox in recent years (yeah, I know bad example). You guys will be there soon enough.
Yup, that gets my vote for That's so Metro moment. In fact, that wins the Gold medal of That's so Metro moments for this series: Gold: Sekagya's pass directly to Brad Davis Silver: Olave's Red Card Bronze: Carney's brain fart clearance to Clark for honorable mention: 4th place: Cummings scoring the winning goal, beating both CB's and Robles diving too late 5th place: Henry "Roy Millering" RBNY's last minute free kick
With the loss to #9 Seed Houston, #1 Seed N.Y. have also set a new record for the Largest Playoffs Upset in MLS History, topping the previous records of "#8 upset #1 Seed" in 2005, 2009 & 2012:
