Just wondering if someone can tell from some screen shots what's wrong with my computer. I don't think it was dropped. Is it possible that the video card came loose or something. I have no idea. It is possible that someone messed with something. One of my students was being cute and set a bios password. I had to remove the cmos battery to fix it... then everything was fine and it looked good... then, a few days later.... this. Just wondering if someone recognizes the issue... if it's software or hardware, etc. These are screen shots at bootup.
first pick looks really odd. Ive never seen that before. The other two looks like somthing isnt secure and fully plugged in due to the graphical artifacts. I would open up the case and check all wires are secure and in good condition. Then i would make sure all hardware is fully plugged/secure and in good condition.if every thing is secure and fully plugged then it might be that your gpu is dieing. That is my first guess, probably wrong, but i think its a hardware problem for sure.
Hmm, thanks for the reply. I tried to open it up, but I don't know what's what. It's a gateway all-in-one computer.... pretty old. In truth, I only use it as a print server... so it still works as such. But if I ever change classrooms or something, I'd need it to work. It's weird. Stuff keeps happening with it. That's actually the second picture. I was only allowed to have three in a post. This is the first:
bent pin on the video connector? bad memory card or improperly seated memory? Third pic in the OP looks like it could be a screen resolution or video refresh timing issue? Possible solution: Power up and press whatever key takes you to system SETUP. Navigate through and reset defaults for all memory, video, and I/O.
You say, I tried to open it up, but I don't know what's what. Then how did you change the CMOS battery? That's on the motherboard! Anyway, that looks like fried video card memory to me. I'm guessing you put a loose wire or something over the fan for the video card or maybe, as someone else suggested, you've dislodged the video card? It might be the ram, ('normal' memory as opposed to video card memory), or the processor. You can try downloading the ultimate boot CD, (UBCD), at... http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and write it to a CD using your CD image writing software as described here... http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/faq.html Follow the guidance on that page to run various memory, CPU, disk, etc, checking utilities. Note: You do NOT need to have an operating system of any particular sort, (or even a hard disk), to run the tests as you boot from the CD itself as the name implies. Frankly, EVERYONE with a PC should have one of these... and it's FREE
