it's already done. They have a new logo. they changed very little, but they made it slightly more modern, but still iconic as hell.
The new Cosmos have done a brilliant job of not screwing it up with a fancy mish mash of new ideas. Keep it classic, keep it true to the very best idea of what the Cosmos were. Well done so far.
I liked the dark blue secondary kit that the Cosmos wore in the late 1970's. I saw it a lot at Tampa Stadium since the Rowdies wore their white primary kit at home.
What I would like to see, personally: First Solid green shirt with white "traditional"/pointed collar and white trim. New York Cosmos crest, white Adidas logo and shoulder stripes, white sponsorship. White shorts, with New York Cosmos crest on one leg and either a green or black number on the other. Behind the neck should be one of the following: the Flag of New York City, or in white text "CITY", "N.Y.C.", or "S.I.N.A." (the famous Pele quote 'Success is no accident.'). Change Solid white shirt with green "traditional"/pointed collar and green trim. New York Cosmos crest, green Adidas logo and shoulder stripes, green sponsorship. White shorts, with New York Cosmos crest on one leg and either a green or black number on the other. Behind the neck should be one of the following: the Flag of New York City, or in green text "CITY", "N.Y.C.", or "S.I.N.A." (the famous Pele quote 'Success is no accident.'). Third White shirt with blue modern collar and blue trim. New York Cosmos crest, but instead of colored in with the normal colors, stenciled in blue and orange. A diagonal sash on the chest/torso would be three-striped, blue-then-white-then-orange, after the Flag of New York City. There would be a blue Adidas logo, and the Adidas shoulder stripes would be the two blue on the outside and the one orange on the inside. The shorts would be white, with the same stenciled blue and orange crest on one leg, and a blue number on the other. Behind the neck should be "COSMOS" in either blue or orange text. Just my two cents.
For a good laugh, someone should post pics of the very first NY Cosmos kit from their first NASL season. IIRC, it had gigantic player numbers on the front, a la gridiron jerseys. Hilariously awful in a "this soccer thing, I don't quite get it yet" sort of way.
No, that's not quite right. Assuming my memory isn't playing tricks on me, the numbers on the front of the jersey were as big as the numbers on the back of the jersey, a la American gridiron football jerseys. That illustration makes it look like the front number was much smaller than I remember it. We'd need an actual photo of the front of the Cosmos jersey circa 1971-72 to settle this. I've seen it online, but can't find an example now. Edit: here we go. These are not the photos I was thinking of, but will do. Apparently it wasn't just the Cosmos, other teams from the early NASL also seem to have adopted the gigantic player numbers on the front of the jersey: http://www.nasljerseys.com/Players/S/Siega.Jorge.htm Cosmos are in dark kit in this photo:
Shep Messing's book The Education of an American Soccer Player had some amusing anecdotes about Randy Horton but it's been so long I don't remember them. Yes, I know, "how do I know they were amusing anecdotes if I don't remember them?" - I dunno.
These are some kits I've come up wit, really feel the Comos should go for a vintage look, Apple as a sponsor pertaining to the 'Big Apple'. Sorry about the size, no idea what photobucket has done to these?
