What exactly qualifies Martin Vasquez?

...with electronic communication also banned (no coaching from the stands), the real thing that will be missing is JK's constant verbal encouragement from the sideline. With Herzog, Ramos, and Keller there to provide additional support, Vasquez should be fine. The team is on fire and playing with abandon (which rhymes with Landon, and in River City, that means 76 trombones aren't far behind)...could be supplanted by vuvuzelas....and the hoisting of one metallurgist's prized cup (unless Panama rides their luck and form to the title).
Does JK get to step on the field after the match?

During today's pre-match presser, JK said that Martin and Andy will share coaching duties in his absence during the GC2013 final v Panama.

This is a clear indication to me that vazquez is not the head assistant naymore, but in respect to vazquez for being klinsmann loyal yes man for the few years, he will share it with hertzog.

Perhaps, this means that Martin may not be as qualified as some first suspected . . :)

Our main defensive coach is a former forward... Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Martin seems like a good guy but given the man's credentials and his role on this staff I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe that he's anything other than the weak link.

Obviously the defense is our biggest problem area and no matter who the coach were it would still be the weakest spot for us. BUT with that said what about: absurd call up decisions (no John or Okugo), set piece futility (lots of goals leaked on set pieces), etc.

Are those things down to our lack of quality and Jurgen (the call-ups) or should some, if not most, of that blame lie with the man who is supposedly in charge of that area of our team and gameplan (according to Jurgen).

I would like to see Herzog replace Vasquez as the assistant head coach and Jurgen bring back Thomas Dooley to take Vasquez's role (main defensive coach). It doesn't have to be Dooley by any mean, anyone with a track record of success who at least has experience playing and/or coaching defense would be fine.

Of course that will never happen (this cycle at least) but it's a nice thought. I could see Jurgen replacing Martin on the staff if we fail to have a good World Cup though.

    Mike Burns!

Hey, how about Beerholder? What's JOB up to - he's had a heck of a soccer education. What other former US or USMNT defenders can we deputize? Melchior Arnold! Charles Kazlauskas. Frankie Heydude.

Steve Davis NBC commentator criticizes Klinsmann selection of Vasquez
Is it possible that Steve Davis is sorely wrong in assessing Klinsmann's ability to select coaches while relegated to the stands? Both Herzog and Vasquez proved their ability on the turf today and more importantly JK is in a position to accurately assess the demands of the Gold Cup Tournament title. What gives with Davis assessment? It appears he utilized others comment, quotes , assessments in order to take shots at Klinsmann. Why Steve Davis would utilize quotes from Kyle Martino, whose thin and underachieving soccer resume is meager at best, is an embarrassment to the NBC sports legacy………………
If Mr. Davis is hiding behind Mr Martino in order to take cheap pot shots at Jurgen Klinsmann I suggest he not quote from Martino who himself has been panned as an unqualified commentator/analyst and fired by the Fox soccer network due to his incompetence! Davis's criticism of Klinsmann is unwarranted………….Klinsmann now has achieved the longest winning streak in the history of the United States Soccer Federation...
Klinsmann has opened wide the door to US Soccer pool to talented players who do not fit the previously held concept of soccer (East Coast centric biased status quo players) Martino’s claim to fame is a Gatorade award from a high school in a small exclusive Connecticut town, while at U of Virginia the team was mediocre at best (prior to his arrival they won a many National championships, and post his graduation they competed for a title). He played minimally with MLS, the National Team a few looks and he failed to make the cut in Europe..
Davis ultimately chose to utilize anonymous and unqualified information in his article.

I think klinsmann first hired vasquez because he was a loyal yes man over the years. But only 6 months later, klinsmann went and asked his friend herzog to come in. A guy who had some mangerial expirence in europe for austria national team.

I doubt most would agree with this statement. Most of the complaints over the last 18 months have been about lack of offensive production such as goals and chances created. The overall defense has been very good giving up less than 1 goal per match on average during JK's tenure.
Both Andi and Martin have been listed as assistant coaches so am not sure what the 'assistant head coach' means. Per JK, Martin has taken the lead in organizing and operations matters (what, when, where...). Martin does primarily work with the defenders in training sessions, JK with attackers, and Andi floats back and forth. We can assume that Matthias Hamann has input into defensive strategies. Dooley was tried and clearly JK did not see him as the right fit.

The bigger question remains: W9-L2-T3 in 2012 and currently W12-L2-T2 in 2013 with a 11 match win streak suggests that JK picked the right assistants.

Yes! Did you see the masterful subs Martin made in all the games? EJ against Honduras, Brek against Panama. Inspired! It was also so cute how he let Klinsmann have Tab Ramos at his side to "relay tactical decisions" ;)

Since this thread established that JK is a tactical moron does that mean that Vasquez is the next Jogi Loew:cool:

Do you have a link to this article? The only one I find was written in March and it's not Steve Davis criticizing - it's him reporting on the criticizing by Martino. Davis sounded complimentary towards JK and the staff on the yesterday's game. From here...
