Its coming to the time when I need to seriously consider where I want to attend and for what reasons. Although I know I am likely going to MCC ( one of the highest rated community colleges) for the first two years for saving money I am still undecided about where to go for my transfer. I have a STRONG desire to go to Suny Geneseo because of its higher echelon status and standards. Its the rigorous academics thats intimidating me a bit. But anywhoo where did all of you go and why? Were you satisfied? And I live in Fairport NY by the way so if anyone here has gone to a college near here I would be interested to know
One of my cousins is starting at MCC this semester, and another has been taking classes there part time for a couple of years now. They both seem to like it. A friend of mine graduated from SUNY Geneseo, and spoke very highly of it. I went to undergrad at a school in Maryland, but I did a Masters degree at St. Bonaventure. If you can handle the isolation of Olean, I would definitely recommend Bonas. Finally, while I've only been to the campus twice so far, I highly recommend the University of Rochester. Not only is it a very well-regarded school, but you would be able to take my intro to composition course (I'm beginning my PhD at Rochester this semester and, starting next year, I'll be teaching undergrad classes). Great! Glad that I could help. I will be more than "somewhat" local soon enough. I'm moving to the South Wedge week after next. One piece of advice- once you have an idea as to what you want to major in, see if you can sit in on some of those classes at Geneseo, Bonas, Rochester, etc. Most schools are more than willing to let you do that, and that will give you a much better idea as to which school fits you best. B.A. International Affairs M.A. (graduate in August) Russian and East European Studies Both from Florida State University. Studied abroad a few times, did a bunch of research/projects throughout undergrad and grad school.
San Diego State for BA (double major Political Science and Linguistics, minor in German); Louisiana State for MA (Political Science, primary subfield Int'l Relations, secondary subfield Comparative Politics), currently Cal Western for JD (probably no concentration, maybe business law).
My story will be a little different. Liberty University for undergrad. B.S. in Religion (literally the easiest degree on the planet if you understand their beliefs at all). It was the only place my parents would pay for and my other options were limited as my scholarship offer to Georgetown (lacrosse) was pulled once I had spinal surgery. Liberty again for my M.Ed. (Educational Technology & Online Instruction). Their school of education is nationally accredited through NCATE. I'm looking at going for either an Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration (George Washington, Michigan, Michigan State) or Curriculum and Instruction focused on Instructional Technology/E-Learning (Vanderbilt, UVA). I'm also taking classes through Coursera, Udacity and edX to supplement what I already have for free. I would suggest, if you're going the community college route, to see what schools your CC has deals with. I've done quite a bit of career counseling/planning for college work with students and I almost always suggest going to a good community college that has deals with 4 year schools. Two that I'm familiar with are Northern VA CC with George Mason and Cape Fear CC with UNC-Wilmington. Those kinds of deals are becoming more common in the US. Don't worry as much about the name, or even academics, of your 4 year degree but focus on how well networked they are. Bug them about job placement numbers in the field(s) you are interested in.
Schooling PCC (Pasadena Community College), Pasadena, Ca UMd - BA in East European Politics and Societies. M Ed. - Christian Brother's University I did PCC because I was not ready for a 4 year school I did Maryland because I wanted to get out of Ca and there were one of the few schools that had both a Russian Area Studies/East European Studies and a good soccer program. I am finishing at CBU because it is in town and quicker than U Memphis. Actually, I am glad I did since several of the people I know who have MEd. from U Mem were dissapointed in that it took 6 semesters AND there was significant overlap in materials. CBU is quite nice in that most people in the department know each other and have all teaching experience prior to become professors. Thus there is a nice ability to teach theory and match it with reality. And many of the courses connect well with each other. I did consider Vandy, but I did not want to live in another city as my wife (again). I doubt I'll get a PhD. The only thing that will make me consider it is if it is payed for in full. I already have enough school debt.
One lousy year at Georgetown [History & Philosophy] when just a pewling kid. BS-MIT-Chemistry [when kid enough to dream of Alchemy at an Industrial scale] MA-Rice -Applied Mathematics [In Houston, and had to learn some more Math. The second made the first bearable] PhD-University of Chicago --Mathematical Physics [The most challenging and intellectually powerful institution I've ever seen. It made a broken man out of me ] All to the slow fugue of now lost time.
It's very nice though a lot of people become disappointed with this school because of the fact that it is very elitist and isn't very considerate of its students and teachers. Many teachers have left because of the lack of respect the UBC teacher's union has gotten. Many friends who have gone to UBC and other post - secondary institutions will disclose that they felt like they were being treated a lot more like human beings elsewhere. Just thought you should know this when making your choice as a lot of students find this out afterwards when it's too late. Nonetheless, it's got the prestige and school atmosphere a lot of people value.
Hi Jacen. Sorry for the late late response. I am about half way into my first semester at MCC and am doing well! For my first semester I purposely took Liberal Arts because I was unsure as to what major to take but have recently changed it to Business Administration. I plan on going to Geneseo after my two years hear and am closely making sure my credits transfer. How is your teaching career going?
Things are going quite well. This is my last semester of coursework, so I'll be focusing on my exam reading for pretty much all of 2013. The goal is to be ABD by December of next year. My freshmen comp students are a blast, and there's a slight possibility that I may get to teach a Shakespeare class at SUNY Brockport next year. All in all, the last year and a half in Rochester has been wonderful.
