There are somewhere bettween 20 and 50 first generation Mexican-Amercans playing in Mexixos develpmentall teams.Quite a few playing for Tigres. Is the USSF keeping an eye on these guys? Hard to know. Does anyone know exactly who they are and what teams they play for?

I'm sure they keep an eye on a small number of players they know about but really doubt they know the exact number and who the players actually are.

Especially when the players come and go at will. One week they maybe training or trialing with a team and they next thing you know they are back at home.

I think it's just too soon to start tracking every Mexican American in the lower divisions until they get to the reserves squad imo. The vast amount of resources to keep tabs on these kids, who the majority may never get first team minutes is just too much.

So far the only player we've lost with much of a connection to the US has been Ponce.

Out of the vast pool of Mexican-Americans, very few have managed to make it through to the first team thus far. Torres, Ponce, Orozco-Fiscal. You could could Ricardo Bocanegra, although he grew up in Mexico.

There's still time for some of the others, but the attrition rate has been very high.

Isn't that the case for any group of prospective soccer players?

Yes. But some rates are higher than others.

Not meaning to be rude, but are you sure about that?

In Orozco and Torres' generation (86s and 87s), there weren't many Mexican-Americans heading south, yet those two plus Castillo have all earned caps. In addition, Vidal, Ochoa and Guadarrama are all still active in their careers. I'm not sure what the right frame of comparison is, but that seems a lot more successful than the usual 1 in 20 players who make it.

As some people have pointed out there are a lot of kids down in Mexico with the fuerzas basicas (Academy) but I'm sure us soccer has gotten better at tracking them. Mexican clubs know about the quality thats in the US and have made more of an effort to find players. Especially clubs like TJ Xolos (Corona, Guido) Santos (Castillo, Joya) and Tigres (Ocegueda, Garza).

Sure, that's true (and I completely blanked on the Tijuana guys for some reason), but there have been dozens and dozens of Mexican-Americans at the U15, U17, and U20 levels who haven't made it. I'm at work, but I think I could dig up an old list at home if I have time.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of guys who never garner much more than a brief DMN mention on BS, so there have been more than most people think.

Yep, and the ones that have, we've gotten in the US squad. With the exception as you note of Bocanegra, who spent all of 4 months of his life in the US and Ponce, who spent more time in Mexico than the US, but who could reasonably be counted as a loss.

We don't necessarily hear about the group of kids that "don't make it." Or we forget about them quickly. Emilio Orozco, formerly of Tigres, is now in the NASL for Fort Lauderdale. Kevin Huezo, formerly of Pachuca, has disappeared. I don't know what happened to Ernest Nungary of Morelia, but he's not listed on their roster anymore. I could go on...................but you get the idea.

There are A LOT of kids in Mexico from the US........most of whom we won't hear from again.

It would be a lot more relevant to see this list from at least five years ago, because
    1. There weren't nearly as many Americans in Mexico then.
    2. We have some clarity about how they turned out

This is why I suggested we focus on 86s and 87s, rather than speculating about the future of current 21-year-olds. I'd also discard a lot of names as irrelevant. We shouldn't lump together the players at Pachuca or Tigres with the ones from Limoneros de Apatzingan.

Kevin should try out with Chivas USA they are looking for Mexican-American players. But MLS should make it easy for those kids who don't feel safe in Mexico to get try outs with our league

Hmm, someone named Kevin Huezo turned up this summer playing for Ft. Lauderdale Schulz Academy in the PDL. May or may not be the same guy, but if it's him, it's not a good sign seeing as the team was the only one in the PDL that went through the whole season without earning a point.
