A lot of leagues start their season a week before the first game with a game called the Super Cup(like Italy:winner of Serie A vs winner of Copa Italia) or the community shield(like England:winner of EPL vs FA Cup winner) I think having a game like this in the beginning of the season is a great way to start the MLS season. Have MLS Cup winner vs US Open Cup winner. And, I would add another trophy out there to be won! What do you think?
Last season the first game of the season (if I'm not mistaken) was New England vs. Houston. It was a rematch of the previous MLS Cup. However, New England had also won the US Open Cup the year before, thereby making the first game a sort of Super Cup. Following the same pattern, MLS could schedule the USOC winner to play against the MLS Cup winner in the first game of the regular season.
USOC @ MLS Cup winner (if they are the same, rematch MLSC), maybe give like a plaque or something to the winner.
sure why not....would be cool to have the MLS Cup/USOC Champion meet b4 the season starts...it would be half assed promoted by MLS/USSF though
out of curiosity, are supercups/community shields treated with much regard overseas? or is it more or less an exhibition match?
So a meaningless exhibition match is going to promote a tournament (US Open Cup) when the actual US Open Cup (which is not meaningless) can't promote itself?
Superliga should be preseason matches between MLS and FMF. Regular season for SS, then MLS CUP. Keep it simple. in order to make Superliga meaningful, MLS should changes their season from early August to Spring.
