Learn not to bet on the home openers ... NE and Colorado really disappointed me. Maybe Adu's visits are where the one-time lookers will come from now on. At least most teams can't go down as the season goes on (hope so).
May I ask where you got the numbers or how you got my numbers in particular? After doing my own math my total was 13,341. Maybe it was the order I put my games into. I guess that takes me out of my top ten status...
I'm getting 12949 for myself. I didn't think I was that far off. Exactly 6500 less than scaryice's total? I nailed SJ (almost) and the LA sellout but was well under on the 3 home openers (figured I was optomistic on DC but the other 2 are just disappointing).
Mods, could you please edit the first post and put this one there instead? (fixed the results) This week's winner? dakotajoe, who was 1,500 above anyone else. Cool I'm first. I must admit I drank much tonight so if I'm way off I have an excuse this week. CLB-DC- 20k RSL-COL- 25k MET-KC-18k CHI-SJ-20k CHV-DAL-17k average=20k
scaryice, any chance of you doing like a cumulative number off count? i really dig the 'wins' and 'top ten appearances,' but just adding total number off from week to week would make for a kickass yearlong competition
CLB-DC- 22k (the kids in ohio love freddy, they were probrably looking at this game for months - ok make that weeks - schedules announced late) RSL-COL- 20k (I don't know does 20k seems optimistic? - or not?) MET-KC-16k CHI-SJ-16k CHV-DAL-18k (return of Ruiz mean anything? Maybe for galaxy fans who have a 14 day rest period from leauge play. will any come for the hell of it?)
What we really need to keep an eye on is on what kind of promotion is the team running to attract attendance in a home game and I could tell you that here in DC the promotional efforts are really SCRANNY.....
I'll be waiting until later in the week to make my predictions once I have found out the weather for all of the home markets.
Based on the past few weeks, the league has so far shown that it has "FAIR-weather" fans Perplexing due to the fact that the NFL can bring in fans even on the most horrid days/nights. Snow, rain, heat, smog, hell it could be the bloody Cardinals and they'd still find a way to have people come and watch. What will it take for more people to toughen out the elements at MLS matches ?
Probably a little better product on the field (like that Chivas - SJ game). People are essentially weighing uncomfortable weather and the quality of product on the field and choosing the product doesn't warrant sitting through uncomfortable weather. Hopefully at some point in the relatively-near-future the product will be good enough to where people will sit through anything for it, like the NFL.
sry if some people already clarrified this, but how are the scores calculated. Is it the difference between the combined total of all the games in your prediction and the actual combined total? Also, do the results from Week 2 include the Week 1 predictions? Thanks for the help.
just Week2. you subtract the guess from attendance at each game, add up the absolute value of the five differences. you could put out an average number for each guesser, divide their total by how many weeks they guessed, then put next to that how many weeks they guessed. it'd be a "little" bit of work though
(DC at) Columbus -- 18,400 (Col at) Real SL -- 26,500 (KC at) MetroStars -- 12,300 (SJ at) Chicago -- 15,500 (Dal at) ChivasUSA -- 15,100
Here are mine, assuming good weather in all places. DC at CLB-18,500-Columbus had a big draw for the Freddy game last year. I also think this is the real home opener since I assume it wn't feel like 20 below. Col at RSL-32,000-Assuming good weather I am obviously VERY optomistic for this one. I look at the attention they are getting, and wouldn;t be surprised if they get higher than this. They will probably put Chivas to shame. KC at Metros-14,000-It will look like less, but I see a decent draw here for their real home opener. SJ at CHI-17,500-Chicago has a similar fanbase to DC, just with about 1,500 less. Respectable crowd. Dal at CDC-15,300-Attendance can only fall from the opener, but 3 goals vs San Jose should bring a decent crowd. Good attendances this week.
That would be a lot of work. Plus, if you say a person has to have a certain amount of weeks to win the overall contest, then somebody could just sit out the last few weeks if they're ahead. I was thinking about how to determine the winner at the end of the season. Using weekly wins seems to be unfair to the people who does consistantly well, week after week. Finishing 1st one week and 20th the next shouldn't be better than a 2nd and a 3rd. So I think the winner of this "competition" should be the person with the most top ten appearances, with wins as the tiebreaker.
Good thought. You're right about someone just sitting out once they got in the lead - i thought of that myself. Your method sounds solid to me. My one thought is, though, that couldn't some weeks like only ten people predict? Which would skew the results some - if you were 50,000 off but 10th of 10 in a given week you'd get just as much credit as someone who was dead-on in first place. Would it be to much work to do like a 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd, 8 points for 3rd etc. through 10? Or maybe do tiers like 5 for a win, 3 for 2nd-5th, 1 for 6th through 10th? Just an idea...
