If Cal Poly and Sac State finish tied, Sac State has the tie breaker (win and tie). I was at the Davis game, and I didn't know there was a red card until I red the box score. I didn't see much going on after the game except players and coaches shaking hands and conversations among former club and high school friends. Maybe the post-game bitching tolerance level has been lowered this week.
Virginia gets a double OT goal from Fr. Darius Madison and beats NC State 2-1. The Cavs finish the regular season 9-6-2, 3-4-1 in the ACC. State falls to 10-9-0, 1-7 in the conference. Meanwhile, Clemson gets a hatrick from Jr. Alex Stockinger - the first 3 goals of his college career - to beat Virginia Tech 3-0. Clemson finished 6-8-4 but 3-2-3 in the ACC. Tech stumbles to the play-in game at 6-9-3, 0-7-1 in the ACC.
So the ACC Tournament should be: Top Half: Winner of #9 Virginia Tech vs. #8 NC State at #1 Maryland #4/5 Boston College vs. #4/5 Clemson (not sure who gets the 4th seed, they tied in points and tied in head-to-head) Bottom half: #7 Duke at #2 UNC #6 Virginia at #3 Wake Forest Does that look correct?
Here's how the ACC finished up with league play. Maryland (14-1-2) - 6-1-1 North Carolina (14-2-1) - 6-1-1 Wake Forest (11-3-4) - 4-1-3 Boston College (8-6-4) - 3-2-3 Clemson (6-8-4) - 3-2-3 Virginia (9-6-2) - 3-4-1 Duke (7-7-2) - 3-4-1 NC State (10-9-0) - 1-7-0 Virginia Tech (6-9-3) - 0-7-1 Duke has a non-con game Friday night against SIU-Edwardsville. Otherwise everyone is done till the ACC tourney starts next week. Maryland beat UNC and Virginia beat Duke so presumably those are the tie-breakers there. Clemson and BC played to a scoreless draw, so I'm not sure how that tie-breaker gets settled. Clemson's gotta be kicking themselves over the losses to San Diego State and South Carolina. They win those two and they're in good shape for an at-large bid.
10 minutes of ot left to [possibly]decide the big ten regular season title between NW and Indiana still tied 1-1.
Harrison Petts hits the post in the 107th minute! Northwestern dodged that bullet and hung on for the tie and clinched the Big Ten regular season title. Is that a first for them?
They did it last year too.[they only clinched a share of this years title.....so this is the 2nd in their history]
I haven't seen IU yet this year, but on paper, their offense is very similar to the 2010 team, with Zavaleta shouldering the load the way Will Bruin did. The early reviews for Todd Yeagley in Bloomington can't be particularly good.
Not sure if it's the same in soccer as basketball, but I know in basketball the next tiebreaker is comparing results against the top team in the conference and so on until a tie is broken. If that's the case, Clemson gets the home game.
How about some props for the Toreros? The Santa Clara-St. Mary's result may get both teams closer to San Diego, but San Diego is still in the driver's seat --in first place even with a game in hand against their nearest competitors. They haven't lost a game since September 28.
Big Ten regular season title is still up for grabs ... i.e., Michigan State is on 9 points and plays at Michigan on Saturday. If Michigan State wins, they take the title outright. If Michigan State loses or ties, then Northwestern and Penn State share the regular season title. (Not sure if there is a tie-breaker in terms of top seed for the Big Ten tourney, but Penn State beat Northwestern head to head.)
Penn State and Northwestern are done with the Big Ten season and are on 11 points. Indiana is also done and finished on 10 points.
However it was settled, Clemson does indeed get the home game http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/110112aaa.html
The big question in my mind is whether to praise their recent form or rip their horrible start. During the pre-season, they played five games against Big West teams and lost them all. That's not how you establish a reputation as a regional power. The upshot is that even if they win the WCC, they're destined for a tough road game in round one (Northridge?), followed by an even tougher visit to UCLA in round two. As good as USD's form has been, it's hard to be optimistic for them.
Nice work by the Zips ... of course, the Zips didn't play Northwestern, and Northwestern beat Notre Dame ...
