Big surprise there concerning the NFL. Most people probably assume the NFL has the highest paid(on average) players of all leagues.
It's always been pretty widely known that NFL players (w/a few notable exceptions) earn way less than baseball and NBA players.
Yes I was very surprised myself. It seems NFL teams have more "water carriers" than other team sports.

I didn't realize he was still playing. At 35 years old and with a screw in his knee, I don't see him having much of a future in MLS.

Hmm. Lots of red. Not a good sign. Thankfully no blue. Hopefully the oranges stays? Red and orange wouldn't be too bad.
The roster limit for an NFL team is 90 players I believe. You essentially have 22 starters plus specialists. Yeah, the money gets spread out more among the players.
.... or just maybe,. they have a horrible players union that negotiated a crappy deal for players whose bodies take by far the most severe punishment of all american sports.
First.....why would anyone be surprised to find out that NFL players are among the lowest paid professionals in team sports? Sheer roster size should have been the first clue. And as for that roster size. It's a 53 man roster. When you don't know......Google can be a good source of information. Just sayin'......
The NFL roster limit is 53 during the season. The 90 player amount is for the beginning of training camp. They have to be down to 53 by the last pre-season game. They don't pay all those guys all year.
Median payrolls, 2013: NFL - $110 million - 53 players (2 million per player) MLB - $100 million - 25 players (4 million per player) NBA - $67.4 million - 15 players (4.5 million per player) NHL - $58.4 million - 23 players (2.5 million per player) Each team actually pays more players than that in the minors and on injured reserves, etc. but the number per team was figured by adding up the "game day" players salaries.
I'd enjoy it so much more if they hadn't felt the need to explain to people who the guy in the photo is, where he's from and what he did to Atlanta.
The report is supposed to be based on 1st team players - what constitutes a first team player I am not sure. I would still expect the first 22 players in the top 20 soccer teams are paid a higher average than the first 22 in the top 20 NFL teams which I still find surprising but not as surprising as how highly basketball players are paid on the whole - the sport just doesn't seem that popular but then I'm in the UK.
