I think I'm up, so I'm posting now.

I'm glad this took so long, as it gave me the chance to go to the art museum with my three-year-old son (who had fun drawing in the lower level) and take some pics of a couple of my favorite paintings in the world (and a really cute one of him!).

Anyway, this is going to take a few posts, as I had to take the pics with the camera in my treo... and I took quite a few, but I wanted some closeups so you could see some of the detail... even though the pics are not the best quality.

My next pick is another triptych... another artist from the Netherlands.

I have only seen the two side panels, as the rest is in some museum in Brussels.

It's two pics of two female Saints. Sts. Catherine and Barbara.

Both are by Jean Bellegambe, and I think they're magnificent.

Like I said, the quality of the pics is pretty low. Come to Chicago and see them! The detail is striking... not just the main figures, but there's a lot going on in the background that I'll try to show you as best I can.

    1. Side by side on the wall. Amazing. I could reach out and touch them. That's St. Catherine on the left and St. Barbara on the right.

    2. St. Catherine. The pearls on her clothes are incredible. They seem to stand off the canvas.

    3. St. Barbara. Look behind her... I've got a closeup of the action coming.

More to come in a sec.

More of the Jean Bellegambe painting:

    Check out the frames...

Now look at what's happening behind St. Catherine. You can see her hair on the right. These are not huge paintings... so you can imagine how small this is. So much detail. This is to the left of her head.

Here's a look behind St. Barbara... this is to her right.

I wonder if people suddenly realized they didn't know that many pieces or something. Sure fizzled quickly.

Just imagine how quickly this would have fizzled if we went for artists rather than pieces

So is it more of an "piece" related thread, a theme related thread or what?

We have been drafing by piece. I guess the best way to put it is if you had a garrery spcae, what 10 works would you have in it. And at the end we figure out who owns the Whitney and who owns the local coffee shop

Didn't realize we had started again. Looks like I'm up.

Can someone with some time make a big board so we can keep track?

I have to check the thread to remember what I already picked. Be back soon.

I can't help picking so many things from the Art Institute of Chicago. It's a phenomenal museum!

I chose this because A.) I love Mapplethorpe. He was the first photographer I ever fell in love with. Actually, the first artist I ever fell in love with. B.) I like this particular portrait of him because while he was viewed as all sorts of evil things, he had this soft, almost fragile side. and C.) This was G-rated, and having to surf for Mapplethorpe photos at work is tricksy-tricksy.
