He's always been this way, even under Magath and Hitzfeld. Even for the NT. I really think he is a timid player and would rather pass it off than go for it like the Alves or Maicon types. I think it doesn't matter where you play him, Lahm is good enough to do well on either side. He had some great moments at RB for the NT and Bayern last season but they are just few and far between compared to the other top fullbacks.

 

I don't know whether you are seeing lahm in the right idea or not. Remember european cup when we beat turkey?? Turkey drew level at 2-2 from a mistake made by Lahm playing left back. Then lahm exploded and charged into the area and scored one.

I think he is a very responsible person and who wants to carry the team, and he also understands that a goal like that does not come easy, and he makes more mistake defensively at left position than at the right. Thus, he wants to play on the right than the left. And also, with the current team defence weakness and our current lack of midfield coverage, lahm needs to play very careful and smart to keep our defence giong.

I think lahm is an extraordinary person and does everything for the team's sack.

I agree that Lahm is a responsible person and player who wants to ensure the team's most optimal performance but that hinders him a bit. It's also true that he is in part held back by the rest of the squad, or has been moreso in the past than the present, but there are times when he runs forward and just stops, gives the ball off, or just doesn't continue a run. Even more frustrating, times when he successfully comes down the right (or left), cuts inside effectively and doesn't shoot. That is timidness to me. I've seen this from him on the left and the right. I don't think the positional difference is as big as some of you suggest.

 

Could also be an instruction. He creates space with his runs alone

I remember it like it was yesterday, sitting on a bench on the roof of some house surrounded by close to 300 Madrid supporters and then he goes on and does that.

Slick and smooth player like Lahm can look like they are "timid" because it all looks so effortless. Explosive players who live off of raw athletic talent may seem more imposing and will catch your attention as a spectator.

The true sign of greatness is what other players say about you. Lahm has an immense stature in the game and his reputation is very good. Coaches and managers like LvG, Mourinho or Loew not what they have with him.
