It looks like Hugo Viana is starting to show some frustration with his reserve role at Newcastle. In a radio interview today, he mentioned that he would welcome to be loaned out for a year, if it meant that he would get more playing time, especially with the European championships looming in 2004.

Here are some comments from Record.pt:

Abola’s Noticias na Hora had a slightly different perspective on the radio interview, mentioning that he wanted to leave the club – not necessarily on a loan deal:

As a Newcastle fan, I certainly hope that Hugo begins to start games more regularly.

Even when playing out of position (wide on the left) he looks good.

Although Gary Speed, Newcastle's main left-sided central midfielder, is injured it looks as if Jermaine Jenas is the preferred replacement.

Laurent Robert, our left winger, is in abysmal form and Hugo would be a welcome replacement for him.

Hugo came on as sub last night against Barcelona, with the score 0-1. He played well enough and almost scored with a free kick taken from the right-hand angle of the penalty area. The goalie saved it, but had a very painful collision with the goal post.

I don't see Vianna as a replacement for Robert at all. Vianna just needs to be patient, his time will come.

I agree that wide left is not Hugo's best position.

However, given that Newcastle have preferred players (I don't say better players) in the centre and given that Robert is pants this season, most of Hugo's opportunities have come as Robert's replacement.

I am sure all that Hugo really wants is a decent run (say 6 games) as starter in his best position, to show what he can really do in England.

The danger of remaining patient with the current situation is the the Portugues national coach may not select a player who is not a regular starter for his club.

I agree with Wide Boy. Although Jenas is the preferred choice in center-midfield, Robert's Mackem-like play has given Viana the chance to show his talent at left wing. I think the only reason Viana doesn't play more is all the money Newcastle spent on the irrelevant Frenchman.

Hey, if things are still not to Hugo's liking, you can always loan him to Sporting next season. ;)
